Best beaches in Valencia to visit this summer

The best beaches in Valencia. The guide that only the locals know

On many occasions, we have been lucky enough to enjoy the best beaches in Valencia with our guests and families. Year after year, when summer arrives, the Valencian coast becomes the perfect plan that adapts to all ages: from extensive urban sandy areas ideal for navigating with a baby stroller to fascinating coves and wild beaches for the more adventurous travelers. We notice that as soon as the temperatures rise, a day under the Mediterranean sun becomes a true wonder for everyone!

Our Prime Location: Port Saplaya

What really impresses those who visit us is the unique environment that surrounds us. Here, the barriers between your accommodation and the sea sand are practically invisible. You have the feeling of being immersed in a picturesque fishing village, surrounded by nautical canals and pastel-colored facades, recreated with a unique charm that many affectionately know as the "Little Venice" of Valencia.

But the goal of Port Saplaya goes beyond offering a comfortable vacation; it seeks to thrill us. Our implicit motto for this summer is to invite you to disconnect and connect with the sea. If we manage to get you and your loved ones to relax and enjoy the sea breeze, we will be fulfilling our mission. After all, summer memories are the ones that last forever.

Discovering the Best Beaches in Valencia

The Valencian coastline is divided into several spectacular sections that replicate different ways of experiencing the Mediterranean Sea:

  • Port Saplaya Beach (Alboraya): A pleasant and family-friendly space with two areas of fine sand divided by the marina. It is home to calm waters protected from the wind, ideal for safe swimming with children.
  • La Patacona Beach: The natural extension towards the south, where you can observe a young, dynamic atmosphere and promenades full of charming cafes and gastronomic restaurants.
  • La Malvarrosa Beach: The classic urban landscape of Valencia, where you can enjoy a very wide sandy area full of life, beach volleyball nets, and the best rice restaurants right on the promenade.
  • El Saler and La Devesa Beaches: An area dedicated to more pristine nature, where you can see impressive protected dunes and Mediterranean pines in the heart of the L'Albufera Natural Park.

Free Services and Activities on the Coast

To enrich your visit to our coasts, the beaches of Valencia offer a complete program of services and infrastructure that are already included for public use. We recommend checking the local summer agenda so you don't miss out on special moments:

  • Accessibility zones and assistance for people with reduced mobility.
  • Surveillance posts and Red Cross lifeguards for completely safe swimming.
  • Free sports facilities on the sand (beach soccer, calisthenics, and volleyball).
  • Occasionally, educational workshops and environmental activities for the little ones on the beach.

Weather in Valencia in May: temperature, climate and what to expect

What is the weather like in Valencia in May? Climate, temperature and tips

If you are planning a getaway to Port Saplaya or the center of Valencia, May is, without a doubt, the most balanced month of the year. It is that magical moment when winter is a distant memory and the stifling heat of July has not yet arrived. Below, we break down what to expect from the weather in Valencia in May so that your suitcase is perfect.

What is the temperature in Valencia in May?

Temperatures in Valencia in May move in a very comfortable range. During the day, highs are around 22 °C – 24 °C, with between 9 and 10 hours of sunshine, enough to walk in short sleeves along the canals of Port Saplaya or have a paella on a terrace without feeling overwhelmed. At nightfall, the thermometer drops to 14 °C – 16 °C: a pleasant freshness that is resolved with a light jacket for dining by the sea.

Does it rain a lot in Valencia in May?

This is one of the most frequent questions from those planning a trip to Valencia in the spring, and the answer is reassuring. May has an average of 25 sunny days, and when it rains, it does so in the form of brief afternoon showers that freshen the environment and disappear in a few hours. Episodes of persistent wind or storms are extremely rare. Valencia is a privileged city within the Mediterranean calendar, and May is, along with June, its most stable month.

Can you swim in Valencia in May?

The temperature of the Mediterranean Sea in May is around 18 °C – 19 °C. For local Valencians, the water is still somewhat cool, but for visitors, it is perfectly suitable for swimming, especially in the second half of the month. The beaches of Alboraya and Port Saplaya already receive bathers who enjoy a key advantage of traveling in the mid-season: crystal-clear waters and few crowds.

What should I pack for Valencia in May?

The ideal luggage for May combines light cotton or linen clothing for midday, a swimsuit and sunscreen—the May sun is deceptive and burns more than it seems—and a sweatshirt or blazer for evenings by the port. Comfortable footwear for walking through the historic center or the Turia riverbed completes the perfect kit.

Why travel to Valencia in May?

May has concrete advantages over the summer: less overcrowding on beaches and in restaurants, mid-season prices and an ideal climate for outdoor activities such as paddle surfing, bike routes or cultural visits. With up to 10 hours of natural light per day, you can make the most of your time without having to get up early.

Frequently asked questions about the weather in Valencia in May

What are the temperatures in Valencia in May?

What clothing is needed in Valencia in May?

Light cotton or linen clothing is recommended for the day and a thin jacket for the nights, when the temperature can drop to 14 °C.

Is it a good month to go to the beach in Valencia?

Yes. Although the water is still cool (18-19 °C), the conditions are ideal for sunbathing and swimming, especially in the second half of May.

Romantic Getaway in Valencia

Romantic getaway to Valencia: the perfect 3-day itinerary for couples

Valencia in May is a gift: temperatures are perfect, the terraces are at their peak, and the city vibrates with the beginning of the summer season without the crowds of peak summer. If you are looking for a romantic getaway with beach, gastronomy, and culture, you will hardly find a better combination than Valencia and Port Saplaya.

Day 1: beach, canals, and the most beautiful sunset in the Mediterranean

Start where you should end: by the sea. Arrive at Port Saplaya, leave your bags in the apartment, and head straight to the beach. A quiet morning with your feet in the water, without rushing and without a schedule.

In the afternoon, stroll along the harbor canals at sunset. The golden light of May on the pastel facades and the reflection in the water create an atmosphere that few cities in the world can match. Dine at one of the seafront restaurants, featuring fresh rice dishes and seafood. A perfect night to start.

Day 2: Historical Valencia and gastronomy

Morning: Central Market and historical center

Breakfast in the apartment with local products and then head to the Central Market. Try the seasonal fruits, nougats, and artisanal cheeses. Afterward, take a walk through the Cathedral, the Silk Exchange—a World Heritage Site—and the narrow streets of the Barrio del Carmen, the most bohemian and charming neighborhood in the city.

Afternoon: City of Arts and Sciences and the Marina

The City of Arts and Sciences is one of those places that impress even if you are not an architecture enthusiast. Calatrava's structures reflected in the ponds are one of the most iconic photos of Spain. Afterward, stroll through the Marina of Valencia: terrace bars, sailboats, and a cosmopolitan atmosphere perfect for couples.

In May, the Marina hosts the Book Fair in the Viveros Gardens: a perfect excuse for a different cultural plan.

Day 3: absolute rest in Port Saplaya

The last day is for you. A late breakfast, another morning of quiet beach, a swim in the complex's pool, and no plans. That is what really makes Port Saplaya special: the possibility of doing nothing and having that be perfect.

Our penthouses with private terrace are ideal for couples: your own space, sea views, and that feeling of having the Mediterranean all to yourselves. Check availability on our official website and take advantage of our exclusive offers for direct booking.

Plans in Valencia with children

Valencia is a city that seems made for families. Mild weather, calm beaches, interactive museums, and a gastronomy that delights even the most demanding palates (including those of the little ones). If you are planning a getaway with children, here are 10 must-do plans for this spring.

Cultural and indoor plans

1. L'Oceanogràfic

The largest aquarium in Europe, featuring sharks, belugas, dolphins, and thousands of marine species. Book your tickets online in advance to avoid queues, especially during holiday seasons. Children love the underwater tunnel.

2. City of Arts and Sciences

The Museu de les Ciències Príncep Felip is an interactive space where children learn science by touching and experimenting. The complex also includes the Hemisfèric with immersive screenings perfect for all ages.

3. Bioparc Valencia

A modern concept zoo where animals are not caged but live in recreated ecosystems. Children can see gorillas, elephants, and giraffes in an environment that resembles their natural habitats. A full morning plan guaranteed.

4. Central Market and its surroundings

The Central Market of Valencia is a unique sensory experience. Take the children to see the colors of the fruits, olives, and cheeses. Afterward, a walk through the historic center to see the Cathedral and the Silk Exchange (La Lonja de la Seda).

Outdoor plans

5. Port Saplaya Beach

The beach at Port Saplaya is ideal for families: calm, uncrowded, and with gentle waters perfect for the little ones. Additionally, the harbor canals are a unique setting for a boat ride.

6. La Albufera

30 minutes from Port Saplaya, the Albufera of Valencia is a natural park of lake and rice fields where you can take a boat trip, see flamingos, and watch the most beautiful sunset in the region. Children will be amazed by the ducks and eels.

7. Jardines de Viveros

The green lung of central Valencia, with centuries-old trees, roaming peacocks, and children's play areas. In spring, the garden is at its peak splendor. In May, the Book Fair (Fira del Llibre) is held here.

8. Bike route along the Turia riverbed

The old Turia riverbed was turned into a 9 km linear park that runs through the city. Cycling is a perfect plan: you can rent bikes adapted with child seats and reach the City of Arts without leaving the park.

9. Malvarrosa Beach

The quintessential urban beach of Valencia, with a promenade, restaurants, and all kinds of services. Perfect if children want to play in the sand with more space.

10. Port Saplaya and its canals

End the day walking along the canals of Port Saplaya at sunset. The colors of the facades reflected in the water, the boats swaying gently, and the smell of the sea create an atmosphere that children will always remember. If you stay in our family apartments, the plan is complete.

Easter beach getaway to Valencia

beach bag

The 2026 Easter holidays are full of plans. While the interior of Spain is filled with processions and tourists, the Valencian coast offers a unique alternative: combining the beach, maritime tradition, and family relaxation in one of the most unique enclaves in the region. Port Saplaya is, without a doubt, the best base to experience it all.

The Semana Santa Marinera (Maritime Easter): a unique tradition by the sea
Just minutes from Port Saplaya, the neighborhoods of Cabanyal, Canyamelar, and Grau celebrate the Semana Santa Marinera, a festival declared of National Tourist Interest that takes place from March 27 to April 5, 2026. Its processions do not go through the historic city center, but rather through the streets of these old fishing villages.

What makes it unrepeatable is its maritime character: some statues are carried to the seashore to pray for the victims of the Mediterranean. On Good Friday, the Holy Burial procession lasts five hours and traverses all the streets of the maritime neighborhoods. And on Easter Sunday, a shower of flowers thrown from the balconies celebrates the Resurrection.

In addition, on Holy Saturday there is a curious tradition: at midnight, the neighbors celebrate the Resurrection by throwing perols (old earthenware pots) from the balconies. An experience that children will never forget in their lives.

Family activities during Easter

Beach and nature in spring

April is an ideal month for the beach in Valencia: the weather is mild, without the heat of summer, and the sand is clear. The Port Saplaya beach is perfect for little ones thanks to its calm waters. It is also worth exploring the Albufera or the parks of the Devesa.

City of Arts and Sciences

A 15-minute drive away, the City of Arts and Sciences offers full days of culture and entertainment. L'Oceanogràfic, the Science Museum, and the Hemisfèric are ideal plans for families with children of all ages during the holidays.

Advantages of staying in an apartment during Easter

On these dates, the Port Saplaya apartments offer a huge advantage over hotels: you have your own kitchen. That means quiet breakfasts without waking up early, the "mona de Pascua" (Easter cake) waiting for you in the fridge, and the freedom to organize yourself without depending on restaurant schedules.

Our apartments have a capacity for 4 and up to 6 people, with terraces with sea views and access to a pool. Everything a family needs to truly recharge their batteries.

Easter dates sell out quickly. If you are planning to come, we recommend that you check availability as soon as possible on our official website, where you will also find the best guaranteed rates.

Port Saplaya: Valencia's little Venice you didn't know existed

Port Saplaya: the little Venice of Valencia you didn't know existed

Port Saplaya, March 24, 2025

Can you imagine waking up every morning with views of the Mediterranean, walking through colorful canals, and enjoying the tranquility that few areas of Valencia can offer? That is exactly what you will find in Port Saplaya, a place that still keeps the secret of being one of the most beautiful and unique corners in the entire Valencian Community.

The story behind the Valencian 'little Venice'

Port Saplaya is not a tourist marketing invention. Its nickname, "the little Venice of the Mediterranean", emerged naturally among those who visited this Alboraya enclave for the first time and encountered something completely unexpected: an inland marina surrounded by pastel-colored buildings, with boats docked at street level and a peaceful atmosphere that does not fit the typical image of Spanish coastal cities.

The marina that gives the place its name was built in the second half of the 20th century, and a residential area with a unique design grew around it. Today, the canals, the Plaza de la Senyoria, and the multicolored facades are the heart of a neighborhood that makes those who discover it fall in love.

What makes Port Saplaya special (and why it's not like other coastal destinations)

There are many beaches and ports in the province of Valencia, but Port Saplaya has a combination that is hard to find: fine sandy beach, peaceful atmosphere, picturesque architecture, and proximity to the city. All in one place.

Mediterranean architecture in pastel tones

The first thing that surprises you upon arrival is the colorfulness of its buildings. Unlike the large apartment blocks that dominate many coasts, here blue, yellow, pink, and green facades that reflect in the canal water predominate. It is this image that connects, inevitably, with the imagery of Venice—although the climate, gastronomy, and character are completely Mediterranean.

An inland port full of life

The canals of Port Saplaya are not decorative: they are a functional port where sailboats, pleasure craft, and small boats coexist. Walking along its banks, stopping for a drink at one of the venues facing the water, and watching the coming and going of the boats is one of the great pleasures of this place, at no cost at all.

Quiet beach without overcrowding

Port Saplaya's beach is, precisely, what those who flee from large urban beaches are looking for. More secluded, with clean sand and calm waters, it is especially appreciated by families with children and couples who prefer to be able to read or rest without the noise of thousands of umbrellas stuck to each other.

4 kilometers from the center of Valencia

Another of the great advantages of Port Saplaya is its location. It is just 4 km from the center of Valencia and about a 15-minute drive from the City of Arts and Sciences. That means you can have the best of both worlds: the calm of a coastal town in the mornings and the cultural and gastronomic offerings of a big city in the evenings.

Why choose Port Saplaya as a base for your vacation in Valencia

If you are planning a getaway to Valencia, the question is not whether to visit Port Saplaya, but whether to stay directly here. Staying in Port Saplaya allows you to disconnect from the tourist pace of the city without giving up any of its attractions.

At Sea You Apartamentos Port Saplaya, our apartments are on the seafront, with a private terrace and Mediterranean views. We have options for families, couples, and even for those traveling with pets, as we are a pet friendly establishment.

Each apartment has an equipped kitchen, air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and access to our seasonal pool. Everything you need for your vacation to be, truly, a vacation.

Come discover the best-kept secret of the Mediterranean

Port Saplaya is one of those places that is hard to describe in words because you have to experience it. The colors at sunset, the sound of the water in the canals, the scent of the sea mixed with the Mediterranean breeze... these are things you won't forget.

If you still don't know this corner of Valencia, this is the time to remedy that. At Apartamentos Port Saplaya we will be delighted to welcome you and for you to make yours, even if just for a few days, the little piece of Venice that we have in the Mediterranean.

Bioparc Valencia, the Zoo with Children: An African Adventure for the Whole Family

We've been lucky enough to visit the Bioparc in Valencia with our children many times. They're now 11 and 9 years old, but the first time they set foot in this little corner of Africa, they were just 1 year old. The Bioparc is a perfect outing that suits all ages: it's easy to navigate with a stroller and remains fascinating for older children. We've noticed that, from the age of 2, the visit becomes a real marvel for them!

The Zoo-Immersion Concept: Without Barriers

What truly impresses visitors on every visit is its revolutionary Zoo-Immersion concept. Here, the barriers between visitors and animals are virtually invisible. You feel immersed in the wild, as if you were in direct contact with African ecosystems, recreated down to the smallest detail to ensure the animals' well-being.

But Bioparc's objective goes beyond animal welfare; it seeks to move us. Its powerful motto, "To Move in Conserving," summarizes its mission. If we can impress and move our children with the wildlife they see, we will be planting a crucial seed in them, instilling in them a desire to conserve the environment. After all, our children are the future of the planet.

Discovering the Habitats of Bioparc

The park is divided into four large habitats that replicate different African ecosystems:

  • Madagascar: A pleasant, green space with wooded areas, a river, and a beautiful waterfall. It's home to playful lemurs (which you can see hopping freely), flamingos, and pelicans.
  • African Savannah: The classic Serengeti landscape, where you can observe large herds of antelopes, elephants, zebras and the elegant giraffes.
  • Equatorial Forest: The dense jungle that is home to species such as leopards, buffalo, and the endearing family of chimpanzees and gorillas.
  • Wetlands: An area dedicated to aquatic life, where you can see the large hippos swimming in the impressive replica of Kitum Cave.

Free Exhibitions and Activities

To enhance your visit, Bioparc offers a full program of activities, all included in the admission price. We recommend checking the Bioparc schedule so you don't miss any special events.

  • Bird and mammal exhibits .
  • Themed guided tours (like those in Madagascar).
  • Feeding times for animals, such as giraffes or gorillas.
  • Occasionally, specific educational activities for schoolchildren.

Bioparc Tickets: Offers and Tips

Special Anniversary Promotion in February 2025!

Attention! This February 2025, Bioparc celebrates its 17th anniversary with a double "cause" promotion.

  • A one-day ticket has a single price of €20 + €1 solidarity contribution.
  • The B! Annual Pass has a promotional price of €50 + €1 for solidarity.

The €1 extra from both promotions goes through the BIOPARC Foundation to bat conservation projects. A great way to enjoy yourself and help others! (Note: this offer is generally valid for online purchases made in advance).

Purchase and Schedules

Tickets can be purchased online and at the box office. If you buy online, you must choose a time slot for entry (10:00, 12:00, 14:00, 16:00) for better capacity control, which makes your visit easier.

Practical Tips for Visiting the Bioparc with Children

  • Food and Drink: Outside food is not allowed, but you are permitted to bring water in plastic containers. If you don't want to spend money inside, you can have lunch in the picnic areas at the entrance and eat your meal outside the park.
  • Dining inside: The park has restaurants, some with excellent views of the savanna. If you eat early, you can take advantage of the off-peak hours to visit areas you haven't yet seen.
  • Annual Pass: If you live in Valencia, the B! Annual Pass is a worthwhile investment, especially since children under 4 get in free. You can visit more often and at your own pace!
  • Parking: There is a parking lot available right next to the Bioparc for your convenience.

We've put together a short video summary of one of our visits where you can see a little bit about how Bioparc works... It's an experience you'll love!

Christmas lights route in Valencia: Magic, walks and hot chocolate

When December arrives, Valencia transforms into a spectacle of lights and color that you cannot miss. If you want to experience the city with a Christmas touch, we have prepared a guide to enjoy the best Christmas lights route, including the famous Viveros Park and the essential stop for chocolate and churros lovers.

  1. Start the route through the historic center

Valencia's old town is filled with Christmas lighting from the Plaza del Ayuntamiento to the Plaza de la Reina. During the walk, you will find streets decorated with lights that change color and luminous figures that make the city shine even on the coldest evenings.

Tip: Wear comfortable shoes, because you will want to stop at every corner to enjoy the decoration and take photos.
  2. Viveros Park: lights amidst nature

Viveros Park is one of the most magical places to see lights in Valencia. During Christmas, the park is filled with light installations that run along its paths and gardens, creating a fairy-tale atmosphere.

    What to expect:

    • Illuminated trees and light paths that seem taken from a movie.
    • Rest areas and photogenic corners to capture the Christmas magic.
    • A family atmosphere perfect for children and adults.
  3. Mandatory stop: Valor cafeteria

No Christmas route is complete without a classic of Valencia: churros with hot chocolate at the Valor cafeteria. It is the perfect plan to warm up after walking among lights and enjoy a sweet and traditional moment.

Important notice: There are always queues, especially on weekends and in the afternoons. The wait is worth it, but plan ahead with time and patience.
  4. Other light spots you can include

    • Plaza del Ayuntamiento: one of the epicenters of Christmas lighting, with a giant tree and light and sound shows.
    • Ruzafa and Colón: neighborhoods with streets decorated in a more artistic and alternative way.
    • Turia Gardens: combine a night walk with lights at various iconic points, ideal if you want to walk amidst nature and Christmas decorations.

And to complete this Christmas experience, a visit to the Christmas markets set up throughout the city is a must:

  • The Craft Fair at the Plaza de la Reina is one of the most traditional: local artisans offer pottery, leather, jewelry, and Christmas decorations.
  • The Christmas Market at the Plaza del Ayuntamiento is another essential central point: stalls with toys, sweets, decorations, chocolate stands… all surrounded by the city center lights.
  • At the City of Arts and Sciences, a very special market is set up with food trucks, craft stalls, traditional workshops (blown glass, pottery…), and activities for the little ones.
  • The Cabanyal Kings' Market, which takes place in the days leading up to Epiphany, is a very beautiful fair for last-minute shopping: toys, books, gifts, in a setting with a lot of maritime character.
  • Another market with a very alternative touch is the one in Tapinería, with local design, original items, creative stalls, and a very authentic atmosphere.
  • If you feel like heading towards the sea, the Maritime Christmas Market (Malvarrosa) is set up on the Promenade, with crafts, gastronomy, music, and a very Mediterranean charm.
  1. Tips to make the most of it

    • Arrive early: especially to places like Valor or Viveros Park, to avoid crowds and enjoy them more calmly.
    • Dress warmly: the nights can be cold and the walk through the park is more pleasant if you stay warm.
    • Keep your camera or mobile charged: Valencia's Christmas lights are very photogenic, you won't want to miss a detail!

How an Authentic Valencian Eats: Customs and Flavors of the Mediterranean

Valencian gastronomy

Valencia is much more than paella. With that, we don't mean you shouldn't treat yourself to an authentic Valencian paella. If you've tried it before and didn't love it, give it another chance; what you eat here is nothing like any other. Besides, there are as many types of paella as there are families, but we can talk about that later on our blog.

The Valencian Breakfast: Light... But With Personality

Although breakfast is lighter than in other regions, Valencians don't give up a good bite to start the day:
  • Toast with grated tomato and olive oil
  • Some typical sweet like fartons or ensaimadas
  • And if they feel like a treat... a cold glass of horchata
But the important part comes later...

The Holy Esmorzaret: The Most Sacred Ritual

If something defines an authentic Valencian, it is the esmorzaret, a tradition that goes beyond eating: it is almost popular culture.
Between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM, you will see bars full of workers, retirees, friends, or students enjoying a good brunch:
  • Generous sandwiches (brascada, blanco y negro, chivito…)
  • Cacaus del collaret (peanuts with skin)
  • Olives
  • A good beer or a soft drink
  • And the classic cremaet to finish
This ritual is so important that it even has its own "ranking" and local competitions.
If we continue talking about rice dishes, in Valencia there is an infinite variety: black rice, baked rice (one of the favorites in every Valencian home), arròs del senyoret, a banda, melòs, caldós, amb bogavant, etc. To try them, we recommend Search restaurants in the Marina that use fresh ingredients, such as the (also classic) Casa Carmela.

Lunch: Paella, But Done Right

Unlike tourists, Valencians don't eat paella just any day or at any time. For them, paella is a ritual to be respected. It is eaten only at lunchtime, never at night, and the day par excellence is Sunday, when entire families gather at home or in a good restaurant to enjoy it. Furthermore, paella is always shared; it is never ordered individually. In Valencia, rice dishes are also the stars of midday, from the Valencian paella with chicken, rabbit, and garrofó beans, to the arroz del senyoret, baked rice, fideuà, or all i pebre, especially typical of the Albufera. Eating in the port area is especially authentic, with restaurants that fuse tradition and fresh seafood.

The Afternoon Snack: Horchata and Fartons

In the afternoon, Valencians enjoy the snack time as a sweet, fresh, and very social moment. Natural tiger nut horchata, served very cold, becomes the star of hot afternoons, accompanied by long, fluffy fartons that are dipped without shame. In winter, the snack time changes tone, and hot chocolate and churros appear, although artisanal ice creams are a classic that never goes out of style. Horchata is not just a drink: it is part of the Valencian identity.

For dinner: Whatever you fancy

The most typical dinner in Valencia is really to go to an area with a high concentration of bars, such as the Cabañal, Ruzafa, or Alameda area, and go for some appetizers and end up having dinner by "tapeando" (eating tapas). What matters is the mixture of feeling comfortable with the company you are with and being in an environment where there are people and you feel at ease.

Conclusion — Eating in Valencia is Connecting with its Soul

Discovering how an authentic Valencian eats is entering the heart of the city: tradition, products, and customs that are passed down in every bite. From the shared solemnity of the Sunday paella to the freshness of an afternoon horchata, Valencian gastronomy organizes the day and social life of its inhabitants.

Eating in Valencia is not just about fueling up; it is about participating in rituals, gathering together, and savoring the Mediterranean with ease. If you are looking to live the full experience — between beach, market, and port — staying in a strategic point makes it easier to connect with the city and its flavors.

Valencia in two days

Valencia in two days

Visiting Valencia in two days is possible if you organize yourself correctly to enjoy life in the Valencian capital to the fullest. From Sea You Apartamentos Port Saplaya, we bring you a guide to discover the best of Valencia in two days.

Visiting Valencia for a weekend

Valencia is a vibrant city with plans, monuments, gastronomy, and natural resources that would take a long time to fully discover. However, its size and layout make it possible that, if you only have a couple of days such as a weekend, you can still have a great experience.

What to see in Valencia in two days

Travel itineraries are quite personal. Some travelers prefer to do it at a leisurely pace, focusing on the gastronomic experience, while others want to visit historical monuments.

Below, we tell you what we would do to discover Valencia in two days. Adapt it to your tastes with the final recommendations to have the perfect itinerary for your vacation in Valencia.

Day 1 in Valencia: the city center and the best sunset

Valencia is a city that can be enjoyed at any time of the year. However, the ideal time to visit might be spring. Starting March 21st, the days become long again, but the heat is not as stifling as in summer.

Your first day in Valencia can start very early; the city is full of life from early on. Do not spend too much time on breakfast; save yourself for the gastronomic plan we propose below.

Start the tour by discovering the city center. In the historic quarter, you can climb the Micalet (the bell tower of the Valencia Cathedral) to get good views of the city. Walk through the streets whose history dates back to Arab times, such as Calle Caballeros. The Lonja de la Seda (Silk Exchange), a spectacle of Valencian Gothic architecture, or the Central Market are also unmissable. In the latter, you can try one of the essential items of Valencian gastronomy: the "esmorzar". Inside the market, amidst fruits and vegetables from the Valencian orchards, is the Central Bar (by Ricard Camarena). The ideal place to take a short break while you eat an incomparable sandwich.

This lunch in the purest "terreta" style will give you energy for a good while longer. Continue walking towards the Mercado de Colón, passing by the Estación del Norte (which deserves a visit, even if you are not taking a train) and the bullring. Once you arrive at the Mercado de Colón, you can stop to have an horchata at the Horchatería Daniel, which is located inside this modernist market converted into a restaurant area.

When you finish your snack, it's time to head to La Albufera to enjoy the best sunset. You can reach the viewpoint by bus or car. This will depend on the time of year; use the Search tool to find out what time the sunset is, but we recommend going a good while before to enjoy the thousands of colors reflected in the lake of La Albufera.

If you still have energy to go out for dinner, we recommend the Ruzafa neighborhood, full of atmosphere for all ages, bars with cuisines from all over the world, and special places.

Day 2 in Valencia: the City of Arts and Sciences and paella

We will start the second day with a walk (or bike ride) through the Jardín del Turia. The longest garden in Europe, located in the former riverbed of the Turia river, has sports tracks, parks for children, a circuit for runners, picnic areas, and much more.

At the end of this route is the City of Arts and Sciences. A futuristic complex that is a must-see during your visit to Valencia. You can visit the Oceanogràfic, the Hemisfèric, or simply enjoy the beauty of its architecture.

For lunch, we recommend moving to La Malvarrosa (Valencia's urban beach) to enjoy an authentic wood-fired paella at Casa Carmela, a true classic.

After this feast, you can choose to stay enjoying an afternoon at the beach, walk along the promenade, or take the opportunity to visit a museum or historical monument you still wanted to discover. End the day dining in the Cánovas neighborhood, preferably at a market cuisine restaurant.

Other things to do in Valencia

Here are some extra ideas for you to complete or modify this guide depending on your time or interests.
  • El Cabanyal: A maritime neighborhood with colorful houses and lots of character.
  • Excursion to nearby towns: Sagunto and its Roman castle or Xàtiva and its imposing fortress are incredible visits.
  • Museums and culture: The IVAM, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Museo l'Iber, or the Centre del Carme are unmissable for art lovers.
  • More gastronomy: Try the fideuà or pumpkin fritters (typical of Fallas).
  • Visit Port Saplaya, the little Valencian Venice.
Are you planning a visit to Valencia? At our hotel, Sea You Apartamentos, you will feel at home and be well connected to the main points of the city of Valencia. In addition, on our offers page you can find special prices at different times of the year.

Saving on vacation

Saving on vacation

Planning a vacation but want to keep your budget low? Port Saplaya and Valencia are the perfect destination, offering everything you need: beaches, charming towns, Mediterranean cuisine, and activities for all tastes.

How to save on vacation in Valencia

Below, we offer some practical tips for saving on vacation. Our recommendations are general, but in some cases, they focus on Port Saplaya and Valencia, where our two resorts are located. However, most of them can be applied to save on vacation wherever you are.

Save on accommodation

To begin, it all starts with choosing the accommodation. A few weeks ago, we discussed the differences between a hotel and an apartment. Among these differences, one of the most significant is savings. Why? If you stay in an apartment, you can save a lot, especially if you're traveling in large groups or as a family. Plus, apartments usually have a kitchen, which allows us to save on some (or all) meals, such as breakfast.

To get the best price, we recommend booking in advance and checking out available accommodation offers. Sea You Port Saplaya Apartments has an active summer offer, and offers are always available in our Offers section.

Save on food

In terms of food, as we mentioned in the previous section, cooking in your apartment can be a huge savings. It also allows you to try fresh, typical local produce and enjoy it on the beach, in the park, or at your accommodation.

If, on the other hand, you'd like to eat at a restaurant, consider the more local ones (often a little outside the most touristy areas) that usually have daily menus for less than 15 euros.

Save on transportation

If you're concerned about transportation, public transportation options are generally good in most Spanish cities (Valencia being one of them). Buses and trains allow you to travel between coastal towns and the center of Valencia. Besides being economical, it's a convenient option as you won't have to waste time looking for parking.

Valencia is also one of the best cities for getting around by bike (and on foot), with thousands of bike lanes and perfect terrain (flat and small). We've already shared some bike routes on the blog.

Free plans in Valencia

There are many free activities in Valencia. The first and foremost is the star of a vacation in Valencia and Port Saplaya: going to the beach. From El Saler to El Puig, you have miles of sand and sea without paying an entrance fee.

Continuing with nature plans, hiking through natural areas like the Albufera or the Garbi can be ideal options.

If your visit to Valencia coincides with the summer, you can enjoy local festivals like the Alboraya Festival, which features everything from games to free concerts.

Finally, there are some museums that are free on specific days or at specific times. Find out more and plan your route around these times if you're interested in visiting them. Likewise, there are many websites like Valencia Secreta that compile weekend plans in the city, many of which are free or very affordable.

With a little planning and creativity, you can enjoy an unforgettable vacation without breaking the bank. And best of all, you'll be supporting local tourism and discovering places you may not have known about. At Apartamentos Port Saplaya, we look forward to welcoming you on your vacation to Port Saplaya.

Importance of the bat in Valencia

Basic Valencian

If you have visited Valencia, you will have noticed that the bat is a constant in the city's symbology: on the coat of arms of both the city and the football team, on prominent buildings, in cultural associations, etc. In fact, at Sea You Hotel we already told you a little about it in our post about curiosities about Valencia.

Why the bat is important in Valencia

To explain the importance of the bat in Valencia, it is important to take into account the legend behind Lo Rat Penat, as the heraldic representation of the bat on the royal crown is known.

At that time, under Muslim rule, a prophet predicted that as long as these animals flew over the city, the Christian army would have no chance of reconquering it.

However, one night, when the Christians were outside the city wall, a bat landed on the royal tent. James I ordered the troops to treat it with kindness, as it was a sign of good omen.

During that early morning, the Muslims tried to launch a surprise attack on the Christians. However, thanks to the bat that warned the Christians by hitting the drum repeatedly, the Christians woke up and were able to win the battle. James I carried it on his helmet and his royal shield.

As a gesture of gratitude for this highly significant moment in the reconquest of Valencia, the animal appears both on the coat of arms of the city of Valencia and on that of other cities that, at the time, were part of the Crown of Aragon (Palma de Mallorca). It symbolizes greatness, protection, and vigilance.

There are many opinions and even studies that contradict the veracity of this legend. The figure of the bat appears on some shields from the 16th century, and from the 17th century, it became official and began to appear on all official prints. Whether it is true or not, what is clear is that the bat remains a key representation of Valencia for its inhabitants today.

Controversy over representative animals in Valencia

After having talked about the importance of the bat in Valencia, we are going to comment on the controversy regarding which animals are representative in Valencia.

Some authors consider that the origin of the bat has more to do with the dragon that we can still see in many representations, such as on the coat of arms of the Generalitat Valenciana.

According to this theory, it would be a visual error that interpreted it as a bat when, in reality, it would be the dragon typical of the Crown of Aragon (from King Peter the Ceremonious).

The truth is that, either way, the importance of the bat in Valencia is still present today. A symbol of proud heritage and identity of the city that represents the strong bond between its past and present.

For this reason, we encourage you to stay alert and look for it during your visit to Valencia. Likewise, if you are looking for accommodation in Valencia, Sea You Apartamentos Port Saplaya is the ideal option as it is near Valencia and well-connected via public transport.

Hotel or apartment: the best option for your vacation

romantic beach getaway

The beach is the perfect place to disconnect as it perfectly combines intimacy with natural beauty. That is why it is an ideal destination for a romantic getaway. At Apartamentos Port Saplaya we are faithful defenders of this idea. Therefore, we want to talk about what a romantic beach getaway is like.

Tips for a romantic beach getaway

If you are looking for a few days of disconnection at the beach with your partner, our first piece of advice is to choose your destination well. There are different options, from urban beach areas to secluded resorts or charming little towns. Choose the one that best suits your tastes.

In our opinion, we recommend opting for small, charming enclaves that combine beaches with all the amenities, with gastronomic and cultural options nearby. The perfect example is Port Saplaya, a privileged corner with picturesque canals, a serene beach, and a welcoming atmosphere. Its proximity to Valencia makes it ideal for a getaway without long distances, but with all the charm of a special destination. It allows you to disconnect from the city, but keeps it close in case you want to go out for dinner somewhere special.

The next step is to choose the accommodation. Here the options are endless. However, on a romantic getaway, one usually looks for spaces that allow for intimacy. For this reason, an apartment can be the best option since it has spaces to enjoy moments together beyond the bedroom, and there are no schedules or cleaning interruptions so that you are the ones who decide the pace of those days.

In the case of Apartamentos Sea You, the terraces with sea views of our apartments are ideal for a romantic dinner with a view. The promenade in front of the building is the perfect setting for a sunset walk.

Why a romantic beach getaway

The main reason is that any excuse is a good one to enjoy quality time as a couple. The beach, furthermore, is the perfect place to disconnect from everything and connect with each other.

The tranquility of the environment will allow you to dedicate time to yourselves and pay attention to things that go unnoticed in everyday life. A simple walk at sunset may be a classic, but it will become an unparalleled moment.

Tips for a romantic beach getaway

Small details can turn a trip into a magical experience. Prepare a special playlist for the trip, surprise your partner with a handwritten letter, or bring a meaningful token to share on the beach. You can also organize a toast with wine or champagne while you contemplate the ocean.

Don't forget to immortalize the best moments of your getaway. Photos on the beach, videos of the sunset, or simply a diary of memories will make this trip stay in your memory forever. The colorful facades of Port Saplaya, sunsets by the sea, and the reflections in the canal water are the perfect setting for unforgettable photos.

In conclusion, whether to celebrate an anniversary, Valentine's Day, or simply to get out of the routine, it is always a safe bet. At Apartamentos Port Saplaya, we will be delighted to welcome you for your romantic beach getaway.

Basic Valencian for your visit to Valencia

Basic Valencian

The city of Valencia is receiving more and more tourists. For this reason, it is important that everyone, both residents and visitors, make an effort to maintain languages and cultures.
Valencia belongs to the Valencian Community, one of the regions in Spain where, in addition to Spanish, another language is spoken: Valencian. Although Valencians are completely bilingual and you will not have any communication problems in Spanish, from Sea You Apartamentos Port Saplaya we recommend knowing a few words in Valencian to show respect for the Valencian language and culture, as well as to have a more complete Valencian experience. Furthermore, it is very similar to languages like Spanish, Italian, and even Portuguese, so it will not be very difficult for you.

  1. Bon dia - Good morning

  3. Bona nit - Good night
  4. Adéu – Goodbye

  2. Què tal? - How's it going? Xino-xano – So-so

  3. Per favor – Please
  4. Pots ajudar-me? - Can you help me?
  5. Estic perdut - I am lost

To finish, we want to leave you with some words such as the days of the week or the months of the year that will help you better understand directions or schedules. We also recommend having a basic notion of numbers, which are present in many situations.

Hotel or apartment: the best option for your vacation

Hotel or apartment

Choosing between a hotel or an apartment as an accommodation option can be complicated. The options are varied and, depending on your needs or preferences, you may prefer one or the other. At Apartamentos Port Saplaya we want to talk a little about the advantages of staying in an apartment.

Advantages of staying in an apartment on vacation

If we talk about the advantages of staying in an apartment, we can start with its versatility . Apartments usually have common areas such as a living room, dining room and kitchen. These spaces allow you to share moments with friends or family in the same way you would in your own home.

Linked to versatility, services are also important. Having a kitchen (even if you don't want to cook every day) allows you to have a refrigerator and small appliances to prepare a snack or a quick breakfast. The same goes for the washing machine, which is especially useful on beach holidays.

On the other hand, if you enjoy cooking, an apartment will allow you to live a more complete gastronomic experience , buying quality food and preparing it with your family. In addition, it is ideal for taking care of your diet or that of your children if you travel with them.

The kitchen also allows you to save on food. Price is one of the most relevant factors why an apartment is usually a better option. They tend to be cheaper, especially for long stays.

Related to this, the greater capacity to accommodate more people is another advantage if you are travelling in a group. Both due to the number of beds and the private common spaces, apartments are the ideal option for group travel.

The opening hours are also much more flexible , as they do not depend on breakfast or room service times. The only time to keep in mind is check-in and check-out.

However, some apartments (such as Sea You Apartments ) do have a reception service , which will allow you to receive advice and help at any time during your holiday.

Finally, many apartments are pet-friendly, so if you are travelling with your dog or any other pet, it will be the ideal option for your holiday.

In conclusion, apartments are the most popular option, especially for families for long stays in coastal areas, because they represent an affordable, flexible and comfortable alternative . If you are looking for accommodation for your holidays, Apartamentos Port Saplaya is the best option due to its comfort and incredible views. If, on the other hand, you prefer a hotel, we recommend Sea You Hotel in the Marina of Valencia.

Suitcase for the beach

suitcase for the beach

Are you planning your beach holiday? Whether on an island or in a small town on the Mediterranean coast, packing your suitcase can be complicated if you tend to take too many things. Also, if you are thinking of visiting Port Saplaya from May onwards, the good weather will allow you to enjoy the beach. That is why, from Sea You Apartments we want to give you some recommendations on what to take in your suitcase for the beach .

Tips for packing for the beach

Our tips for packing for the beach are basic, but we hope they are very useful. We will start, as with any luggage, taking into account our destination in all aspects: transportation, temperature, activities to do, duration, accommodation, etc.

All of these factors are important for several reasons. For example, the size of your suitcase allowed , its weight and even the liquids you can carry will depend on the means of transport.

During these days, you can put in your suitcase those items that you do not use on a daily basis . For example, beach clothes or sunscreen. Leave toiletries for last, since you will probably have to use them at the last minute (the toothbrush).

The amenities you will have access to may depend on your accommodation, for example, if you need to bring shower gel or towels. That way, you can cross that off your list and free up that space in your suitcase.

Once you have that clear, we recommend making a complete list a few days beforehand. During those days, you can put in your suitcase those items that you don't use (beach clothes or sunscreen). However, leave out toiletries like the toothbrush that you will have to use until the last moment.

Our last recommendation may not be to everyone's taste: travel light . Remember that you are going on vacation, so don't make packing a stressful time. Especially if your destination is the sea, there is no need to overload yourself as people always dress in little clothing.

Essentials for a beach suitcase

In this section we want to make a basic list of things that we recommend including in your suitcase for the beach. It is a list focused on everything you need for your vacation near the sea. However, as we say, this will depend a lot on your plans and preferences. Take this as an example and adapt it to your needs .

First and foremost, the most important thing in this destination: a pair of swimsuits and clothes to wear on the beach. Here, these can range from sarongs, dresses, or shorts and basic t-shirts for men. Obviously, flip-flops (and some water shoes for rocky beaches) are also essential.

If we're thinking about more functional clothing, don't overcomplicate things. Basic, cool dresses , linen button-down shirts for men, and a couple of more dressed-up looks in case you're going out to dinner. Bring long pants in a cool fabric like linen or cotton (or jeans) and a light jacket in case it gets chilly at night.

As for footwear, some basic sandals that you can wear on a daily basis and another pair of dress shoes. If you are a sporty person, don't forget a couple of sports outfits and some sneakers.

Don't forget underwear and pajamas . We also recommend that you bring a cap or hat to avoid excessive sun exposure on your face. Continuing with accessories, you can't forget to bring sunglasses and jewelry that you like to wear.

To go down to the beach, you will need a bag . We recommend that it be light and versatile and that you use it to carry other things on the way or that you can use if you go on a day trip . Something you may want to bring is a beach towel since, although the accommodation provides them, they are usually for the bathroom.

On the other hand, take a small purse or fanny pack (depending on your style) that you can use when you escape to the city or go out to dinner. We also recommend using it during the trip, for your most precious belongings (passport, wallet...) to prevent them from getting lost (of course, don't check them in).

Nowadays, other essentials are chargers and electronic devices such as tablets or e-books. Also, all the leisure items you like the most: snorkeling kit, beach paddles, sports camera, a book, etc. If you travel with children, remember to take everything they might need such as tissues, bottles, wipes, etc.

Finally, it's time to talk about your toiletries bag. Don't forget the following: sunscreen (face and body), aftersun and moisturising cream, toothbrush and toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner, deodorant, mosquito repellent, make-up and make-up remover. We also recommend taking a mini first aid kit with paracetamol, stomach protector, plasters and anti-chafing stick.

If you are looking for accommodation near Valencia and Alboraya for Easter, Apartamentos Port Saplaya is the best option for its comfort and incredible views.

Fallas of Valencia

Fallas in Valencia

If you are thinking of visiting Valencia in March, you might be interested in seeing the Fallas, but don't quite understand the dynamic. That's why, from Sea You Apartamentos Port Saplaya, we are going to summarize the key aspects of the Fallas in this post so you can experience them to the fullest.

What are the Fallas

The Fallas are the most important festivals in Valencia, celebrated in March (with the most important days being from the 15th to the 19th) and were declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2016. During these days, fire, music, and art flood the city's streets.

The term "fallas" is used both to define the festivals, the monuments installed in each street, and also the groups of people who celebrate the festivals.

When we talk about art, the fallas are spectacular monuments made of cardboard, wood, and other materials that can reach up to 20 meters in height. These monuments usually have some kind of social, political, or cultural critique and are installed in all neighborhoods of the city.

When we talk about "fallas" as "fallas commissions," they are groups, generally neighborhood-based, that come together to celebrate the festival. Each of these fallas commissions sets up a monument and organizes different parties and events during the celebration days.

Key Events of the Fallas

Fallas in Valencia

As we mentioned, the Fallas begin on March 1st (or even a few days earlier with the "cridà"). However, the main days start around March 15th. Since there are many Fallas events, we will highlight our favorites so you can enjoy those that take place on the days you are in Valencia.

We will start with the mascletà, which is one of the most special events for Valencians. Every day, from March 1st to the 19th, around 300 kilos of gunpowder are set off for about 10 minutes in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. An incomparable sensory spectacle with deafening noise and vibration that leaves no one indifferent.

The plantà takes place on the night of March 15th and marks the moment from which you can see the completed fallas (monuments). The city becomes an open-air museum from that night onwards. In the preceding days, you will see streets full of falla artists working against the clock to make them perfect.

The ofrenda is a parade where, on the 17th and 18th, thousands of falleros and falleras bring flowers to the Virgen de los Desamparados, the patron saint of the city. All these bouquets of flowers are used to create the Virgin's mantle, which is installed in the Plaza de la Virgen.

The nit del foc is the night of March 18th, when the largest pyrotechnic show of all the Fallas is fired. People gather near the Turia Park to enjoy an unparalleled spectacle.

The final act of the Fallas, where everything ends and begins again, is the "cremà." On the night of March 19th, the festivities conclude with the burning of the falla monuments. Valencians gather to watch fire consume this ephemeral art on the night that gives meaning to the Fallas.

Tips for Enjoying the Fallas Like a True Valencian

If you are planning to visit Valencia during the Fallas, we will give you some tips so you can enjoy them to the fullest like a true Valencian.

Experiencing the Fallas can be overwhelming if you've never been before. The city is full of people who want to enjoy the festivals, and at times, it can become chaotic.

It is difficult to get around using public transport, especially at certain times of the day, as many streets are closed for many of the events we have explained above. Therefore, allow plenty of time to travel (especially if you need to be somewhere at a specific time) and dress comfortably because you will likely have to walk a lot. This comfort is important and also applies to the nightly street parties where falleros (and non-falleros) dress very casually.

Enjoy the Valencian gastronomy. Take advantage of these days to enjoy classics like Valencian paella as well as Fallas specialties like pumpkin fritters with chocolate.

Finally, accommodation can be difficult during these dates as, as we mentioned, the city is very congested. Therefore, we recommend booking your accommodation in advance to ensure you don't have any problems. Although the entire city celebrates the festivals with great enthusiasm, the center is particularly congested. Therefore, staying at Sea You is the ideal option as it is well-connected, but in a quieter area.

Holy Week in Alboraya

Holy Week in Alboraya

Semana Santa (Easter) is just around the corner in Alboraya. These festivities, declared of Provincial Tourist Interest since 2018, are of great importance to the citizens of the area. If you are staying in Port Saplaya at this time, we recommend that you come and enjoy them.

When is Semana Santa celebrated in Alboraya?

As we all know, Semana Santa changes its dates every year as it depends on the astronomical full moon. Thus, it is the Sunday immediately after the first full moon after the March equinox. The dates range from March 22 to April 25.

This 2025, Semana Santa in Alboraya (and throughout Spain) will be celebrated from April 17 (Holy Thursday) to Sunday, April 20.

History of Semana Santa in Alboraya

Semana Santa is a festival of special interest in Alboraya and Port Saplaya. Ten different brotherhoods take part, with incredible hand-made floats that go out in procession accompanied by the members of the brotherhood.

This festival has a long tradition in the town, with evidence of its celebration dating back to the 16th century. In 1975, the Local Board of Brotherhoods and Corporations of Alboraya was founded, which brings together all the brotherhoods. This is one of the most important parts of these festivals in Alboraya, which led to the birth of many groups in institutions of great importance in the social life of Alboraya (Musical Society, Mercantile Athenaeum and Agricultural Cooperative).

How Semana Santa is celebrated in Alboraya

As in many other places, the most important events of the Semana Santa celebration in Alboraya begin on non-working holidays: Holy Thursday and Good Friday. However, the festivities begin much earlier. In February the Proclamation takes place and then each brotherhood makes its move during Holy Week (until Holy Wednesday). The last event is the Meeting on Easter Sunday.

The main processions are:

  • Friday of Dolores: Transfer of the Germandat dels Set Dolors pass.
  • Passion Saturday: Transfer of the float of the Brotherhood of Mercy
  • Palm Sunday: Solemn procession of palms and transfer of the float of the Royal Brotherhood of the Holy Face
  • Holy Monday: Transfer of the float of the Brotherhood of the Holy Sepulchre and the Holy Chalice. Penitential Way of the Cross carrying the Christ of the Souls from the Vilanova Hermitage through the Alboraya orchard to the Church.
  • Holy Tuesday: Transfer of the Steps of the Corporation of Grenadiers of the Virgin of Solitude and the Holy Chalice.
  • Holy Wednesday: Transfer of the Steps of the Brotherhood of Prayer in the Garden and Our Lady of Hope and the Holy Chalice, and of the Brotherhood of the Purest Blood.
  • Holy Thursday, Day of Fraternal Love and Local Council Day: Solemn Procession of Jesus Arrested.
  • Good Friday, at 9:00 a.m.: Pious Stations of the Cross and Solemn Holy Burial.
  • Holy Saturday, at 11:30 p.m.: Glorious Encounter of the Risen Jesus and Our Lady of Love.

Please note that this is an approximate schedule based on previous years. However, at any time during that week you can enjoy an unrivalled festive atmosphere. Make the most of your stay in Port Saplaya and experience the authentic Holy Week in one of the Valencian towns where it is most celebrated.

If you are looking for accommodation near Valencia and Alboraya for Easter, Apartamentos Port Saplaya is the best option for its comfort and incredible views.

Traveling alone and choosing the perfect destination

travel alone

Traveling alone is a transformative experience that more and more people are choosing to discover the world at their own pace . If this is an option you are considering, today we are going to talk about the advantages of traveling alone and the perfect destination to do so.

Advantages of traveling alone

The main advantage mentioned by solo travelers is freedom. Both in planning and in the trip itself, the traveler decides the pace of the trip . There are no schedules, itineraries or plans agreed upon with other people.

It's the perfect way to tailor the trip to the traveler's interests and to be open to improvisation . If you feel like spending a day on the beach reading or traveling around the city on public transportation to get to a small art exhibition, no one will give you any problems.

This freedom comes with another advantage: personal growth. Both because of the amount of time to reflect and the need to be self-sufficient in all situations, a solo trip can be a super enriching experience .

Just by making the decision to travel alone you are surely leaving your comfort zone and overcoming fears. In addition, you will surely be alone with your thoughts at many times. Therefore, it is perfect to reflect on those things that are on your mind if you wish. On the other hand, by not depending on anyone else, you will have to solve any inconvenience of the trip alone and, thus, you will develop autonomy and self-confidence.

Finally, it will allow you to connect more with the local culture and way of life . Often, if we travel in large groups, we don't have the opportunity or need to interact with other people. Traveling alone is easier, as is interacting with other travelers. This enriches the travel experience with unforgettable anecdotes and lessons.

Tips to enjoy traveling alone

If you fancy the experience but are a little apprehensive, we have some tips that may help you out.

We'll start with the destination. Take advantage of the fact that it's only up to you to choose the destination that you like the most . The most popular options are cities with good and safe infrastructure or beach areas where you can relax.

We recommend that you plan the essential parts of the trip, such as accommodation and how to get around the destination. However, we advise you to leave room for improvisation in order to enjoy one of the main advantages of this style of travel: spontaneity. In addition, we recommend that you do not overload yourself with luggage, as it will be easier for you to move around with agility.

Finally, travel alone without fear, but be sensible. Inform someone you trust of your destination and trust your instinct to identify possible tricky areas or situations.

Perfect destinations for solo travel

If you are looking for the perfect destination for your next solo getaway, we suggest Port Saplaya . Known as the little Venice of Valencia , its canals, beaches and quiet corners are ideal for reconnecting with yourself. As we said a little while ago, disconnecting near the sea is one of the best bets for our well-being.

Port Saplaya is a Mediterranean enclave where time stands still, but close to a magnetic city like Valencia . The perfect combination for a solo getaway that has everything you need to find the plan that best suits you at any given time. Stay in our apartments on the seafront and feel at home on your solo trip.

Romantic plans in Valencia

Romantic plans in Valencia

There are many romantic plans in Valencia throughout the year, but we have decided that February is the perfect month to talk about them. Depending on each couple's preferences, you can make romantic plans in Valencia outdoors, more cultural ones, or more relaxed ones. Below, we summarize some of them.

Romantic plans to do in Valencia

A sunset

Watching the sun go down and the day end is always a good plan, but it is even better if it is done next to that special someone. In Valencia, there are many options to enjoy an unforgettable sunset.

L’Albufera is perhaps one of the most popular and, the truth is, it's no wonder. If you don't know it, it is a protected natural park just 20 minutes from Valencia. An oasis of tranquility that offers a spectacular sunset in which the sky and the lake are painted in every color and which you can enjoy from the pier area that overlooks El Saler or Catarroja.

Another not-so-popular option is to enjoy the sunset at the Parque de Cabecera. This park, located north of the city, is slightly elevated with respect to the rest of the city, so from there, you have spectacular views of Valencia. Bring a blanket and something to snack on and spend a pleasant time.

Picnic in nature

Continuing with plans in nature and outdoors, Valencia has two more natural spaces that can be ideal for a romantic plan.

We start with the Turia Gardens (Antiguo Cauce del Rio Turia). A park that crosses the city with different environments or spaces where you can take a walk, rent a bicycle, or have a picnic. The park ends at the City of Arts and Sciences, where you will see many groups and couples enjoying the good weather in Valencia.

Another incredible space in Valencia is the beaches. Near the apartments, you can find Port Saplaya Beach, one of the city's two urban beaches. An ideal spot for couples who like the sun and the sea. Enjoy an afternoon walking on the beach (or swimming, depending on the weather) and finish it with a sunset picnic on the sand. You won't go wrong.

A date at the museum

If you are looking for a more cultured plan, Valencia has a great offer of museums. Some are free, like the CCCC (where the exhibitions change every few months). Others are more classic, like the Museum of Fine Arts, and others take you on a journey through time, like the Museo l’Iber, which has the largest collection of lead soldiers in the world.

A morning date at the museum and an appetizer on a sunny terrace can be a good romantic plan and, at the same time, enriching.

Disconnect near the sea

Disconnect near the sea

In a world like today's with so many stimuli, technology and connectivity, it is increasingly difficult to get away from routine. That's why disconnecting near the sea is the best option to find a space where you can get away from the noise (both real and figurative) and connect with yourself.

Disconnection near the sea

It's almost a cliché to unwind near the sea, but there's science to back it up. The sea has an almost magical effect on people . This phenomenon, known as the "blue effect," explains how coastal environments reduce stress, improve mood, and even boost creativity.

When we are near water, our brain decreases cortisol levels (the stress hormone) and increases the release of serotonin, associated with happiness.

The main reason seems to be the sound of the waves. A constant and relaxing rhythm that helps reduce anxiety and help you sleep well. The sea also has an impact on other senses, such as smell (the salt) and touch (the sea breeze) that help us connect with the present moment.

Connection with nature near the sea

Disconnecting near the sea also means reconnecting with something else: nature. On the coast, we can take a walk on the sand without shoes, observe the continuous movement of the waves or the immensity of the horizon.

This direct contact with the natural environment inspires us and helps us put our daily problems into perspective , reorder priorities and connect with our emotions. An essential time for introspection in a world where we rarely give ourselves permission to stop.

Where to disconnect near the sea

If you are looking for a place where you can enjoy all these benefits, Port Saplaya is an ideal option. Known as the little Venice of Valencia , its unique setting combines the charm of the canals, the constant murmur of the water and an atmosphere that invites you to relax.

Whether you're strolling through its colourful streets, enjoying its beach or simply watching the sunset, Apartamentos Port Saplaya is the perfect refuge to unwind and recharge your batteries . In addition, our apartments have large capacity options (so you can come with the whole family) or smaller ones (so you can unwind alone).

Valencian cuisine

Valencian gastronomy

Valencia is much more than paella. With that, we don't mean that you shouldn't treat yourself to an authentic Valencian paella. If you have tried it before and don't love it, give it another chance; what you will eat here is nothing like any other. Furthermore, there are as many types of paella as there are families, but we can talk about that later on our blog.

However, a fish does not live by water alone, and Valencians do not live by paella alone. Valencia (and the Valencian Community in general) is a very rich land gastronomically speaking. Each area and even each town has its typical dish or sweet for every time of the year. Therefore, so that you can experience Mediterranean life to the fullest, we are going to do a brief review of the Valencian gastronomy that you will be able to try when you stay at our hotel on your next visit to Valencia.

Unmissable dishes of Valencian gastronomy

Let's start by talking about paella, although without going into much depth. This iconic dish, originating from the region, is made with rice from the Albufera, chicken, rabbit, green beans, butter beans, and a touch of saffron. You can try it in classic restaurants like La Pepica or in any of the restaurants in El Palmar.

If we continue talking about rice dishes, in Valencia there is an infinite variety: black rice, baked rice (one of the favorites in every Valencian home), 'arròs del senyoret' (gentleman's rice), 'a banda' (rice in fish broth), creamy rice, soupy rice, with lobster, etc. To try them, we recommend you Search for Marina restaurants that use fresh ingredients like the (also classic) Casa Carmela.

Another popular Valencian dish is fideuà, a delicious alternative to those previously mentioned that replaces rice with thin noodles. The classic one is fish-based with ingredients like squid, shrimp, and different fish, although there are also variants with other ingredients like duck or foie gras.

If you feel like trying Valencian gastronomy, you can organize a visit to Valencia and Sea You Apartamentos Port Saplaya, located in the Marina of Valencia, is the ideal accommodation option.

Sustainability actions in Apartamentos Port Saplaya

Sustainability actions Port Saplaya Apartments

We recently talked on this blog about the importance of sustainable tourism . As we discussed, it is the only way we can continue to enjoy all corners of the world without ruining them and their local communities. One of the best ways to ensure you are reducing your impact is by choosing environmentally-friendly accommodations that apply sustainable practices and respect the environment.

At Sea You Hotels we are determined to be part of these sustainable accommodations. That is why we are gradually implementing measures that help to take care of the environment of our accommodations.

In the case of the Port Saplaya Apartments , we are going to discuss some of these measures to help take care of Port Saplaya.

Measures to help take care of Port Saplaya

Thanks to government aid and subsidies, such as the Next Generation funds, we are investing 1.7 million euros in our Sea You Apartamentos Port Saplaya complex to improve energy efficiency .

Among the measures that have been carried out, we will comment on some of them. We started by replacing windows with more insulating systems such as PVC windows with RPT and double glazing type climalit. This allows for better thermal insulation (cold and heat) and acoustic insulation.

We continued with the incorporation of home automation systems for better use of energy, such as LED sensors, open window control, etc. The façade was improved with SATE , a construction technique that significantly improves the thermal and acoustic insulation of the building. Finally, aerators were installed in the taps to reduce water consumption.

The project has been carried out in different phases. The first phase began with the Mesana building, with 26 apartments, from March to June, inclusive. Then work continued on the Mayor building and the Trinquete building.

In this way, we aim to reduce electricity consumption by around 30% as well as water consumption. Obtaining the energy needed for our apartments from more sustainable sources, generating fewer emissions and improving the energy ratings of our buildings. All this, as always, to achieve greater comfort for our clients during their stay in our accommodation.

Port Saplaya is a unique tourist destination that depends on the commitment of each visitor to preserve its beauty and charm. Practicing sustainable tourism is not only a way to protect the environment, but also to enjoy a more authentic and enriching experience. At Apartamentos Port Saplaya we contribute to ensuring that Port Saplaya remains a special and preserved corner for everyone, stay with us.

Sustainable tourism in Port Saplaya

Sustainable tourism in Port Saplaya

Port Saplaya is an idyllic destination to spend your holidays at any time of the year. This special charm requires a commitment from locals and visitors to preserve both the ecosystem and the uniqueness of its streets.

For this reason, at Apartamentos Sea You Port Saplaya we want to talk about how to support sustainable tourism in Port Saplaya .

How to have less impact when we travel

Sustainable tourism seeks to minimize environmental and social impact , to enhance the well-being of the local community and preserve natural resources. Apart from tourism companies, this responsibility falls largely on people, that is, on travelers. Below, we are going to talk about some ways to reduce the impact when we travel .

To start, we recommend making responsible use of resources such as electricity or water. Even though we do not have to pay for these services specifically during our stay, we should not waste water by leaving taps open or electricity by leaving the lights on when we are not in the accommodation. This also applies to resources such as amenities or the daily change of towels.

The next step would be to reduce waste : try not to use single-use plastic containers during your trip (and in your daily life) and, if you have to, recycle them correctly.

Transport is also an essential aspect. We know that getting to your destination may require you to use polluting means of transport such as by plane. However, once you are at your destination, move around in a sustainable way . Port Saplaya and Valencia in general are very well prepared for getting around by bicycle, on foot or by public transport, both due to their size and layout.

Sustainable tourism often involves much more than just environmental issues. It also involves caring for the local culture, society and economy . For this reason, we recommend that you buy from small businesses to support local businesses and artisans. This, in addition to being the best way to have an impact on society, allows you to get closer to the culture of the destination.

The same applies to the customs and norms of the destination. Both cultural aspects and the norms and habits of the locals must be respected so that the coexistence between tourism and local life is sustainable .

Finally, you can dedicate part of your vacation days to participating in beach cleaning projects, environmental awareness workshops or other volunteer activities .

At Apartamentos Port Saplaya we are committed to sustainable tourism and we encourage all our guests to take care of Port Saplaya with us. In future posts we will share what actions we are taking to contribute to caring for the environment and the surroundings.

Baked Rice

Do you know about baked rice? It is one of the most popular dishes in Valencian homes but still remains largely unknown in Valencian gastronomy.

A unique mix between paella and stew, we give you the keys to baked rice so you can enjoy it on your next visit to Valencia.

What is baked rice

Baked rice is a dry rice dish with chickpeas, pork ribs, and sausage, typical of Valencian cuisine. It is a simple recipe that is commonly eaten in Valencian homes.

Possibly greatly unknown to anyone who isn't Valencian, baked rice is a strong competitor to Valencian paella in locals' preferences.

Its origin is likely related to the cooking of using up leftover stew. Thus, leftovers were used in a different way. For this reason, many of the ingredients are similar to those in "puchero" (the Valencian version of stew), and the recipe can vary greatly in each household.

It is also said that the origin comes from a recipe inherited from the Valencians' Arab ancestors. In its early days, it was prepared with lamb, and sometimes rice was even substituted with wheat or other grains.

The recipe has evolved over time, adapting to the customs of each era and even religious needs. During the Valencian reconquest, pork (with ribs and bacon) was reintroduced.

Ingredients and recipe for baked rice

The ingredients for baked rice (our version) are:
  •  Rice (300 grams)
  • Broth (or water) 600 ml.
  • 4 pork ribs
  • 2 strips of bacon or pancetta
  • 100 grams of cooked chickpeas
  • 2 onion blood sausages
  • 1 tomato
  • 1 potato
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • 3 tablespoons of crushed tomato
  • 1 head of garlic
  • Salt
  • Sweet paprika and food coloring
The recipe for baked rice is simple. We will start by preheating the oven to 200 degrees Celsius and sautéing the meat with oil and garlic. Do it slowly so it doesn't burn, but we recommend it be browned to give flavor to the dish. When the meat is almost done, add the potato in medium-thick slices.

Wait a few minutes and add the rice and paprika, stirring everything in the pan so it absorbs the flavor of the sofrito. Be careful not to "burn" the paprika, or the whole dish will have a burnt taste.

Place all the ingredients in a clay pot that is wide but not too deep and add the chickpeas. It's time to add the broth (or water). The broth can be store-bought (we recommend stew broth), leftover from a previous stew, or you can make it beforehand with the pork ribs or bones. At this point, we add a little food coloring.

Regarding quantities, you should add two measures of broth for every measure of rice and mix it well with all the ingredients, ensuring they are evenly distributed.

Place the pot in the oven, where it should stay for about 20 minutes. It is advisable to keep an eye on it to prevent it from overcooking, as the time depends on each oven. The result should be dry and golden rice.

Curiosities and tips for baked rice

An interesting curiosity is the nickname for baked rice: "arròs passejat," or "walked rice." The reason? Most homes didn't have ovens, so women would take their pots of baked rice to the public oven or the nearest bakery to cook the rice there.

Some tips for making perfect baked rice are very similar to those for a good paella. Use bomba rice (which absorbs broth but prevents it from becoming mushy), use broth made beforehand with meat or bones instead of water for more flavor, and use shallow, wide containers.

If you are planning a visit to Valencia to try this and other delights of Valencian gastronomy, Sea You Apartamentos Port Saplaya, in Marina de Valencia, is the ideal accommodation option.

Patacona Beach

View of La Patacona beach

La Patacona beach is one of the beaches of Alboraya, a municipality to which Port Saplaya belongs, where our apartments are located on the seafront.

What is La Patacona beach like?

La Patacona is a large beach, with a length of more than 1,000 metres and an average width of 100 metres.

As it is an urban beach, it has many services . In addition, it has obtained various quality and environmental certificates. Its proximity to the city of Valencia makes it one of the most popular in the area, although less touristy than its neighbouring beach, La Malvarrosa.

The promenade at Patacona beach is always quite busy as the Valencian coast has moderate temperatures all year round. It is not unusual to find people dancing salsa, groups of friends playing volleyball and much more.

This promenade is full of a great gastronomic offer , with places where you can enjoy a good breakfast or snack such as La Más Bonita, and others where you can try traditional cuisine of the highest quality, such as Casa Carmela.

The beach, with fine sand and perfect Mediterranean waters, is the ideal place to practice different water sports such as paddle surfing.

On the other hand, it is a beach accessible to people with reduced mobility and, during bathing season, has trained personnel to make the experience of these people on a day at the beach more pleasant.

How to get to La Patacona beach

As for connections and ways of accessing it, La Patacona beach is easily accessible both with your own vehicle and by public transport. There are different bus lines , such as line 31, which connect the city of Valencia with the beach.

Despite being an urban beach belonging to Alboraya, it is on the limits of the city of Valencia. However, with a short walk it is possible to get there from Port Saplaya (crossing the Valencian orchard and the Ermita dels Peixets ) in about 30 minutes or by car in about 15 minutes.

Christmas in Valencia

Christmas in Valencia

Christmas in Valencia is an ideal time to discover the city on a visit with even more charm. The entire city is dedicated to celebrating one of the most important holidays on a cultural level.

Illuminated streets, roasted chestnut stalls, Christmas markets, ice rinks, and much more. We’ll tell you how to enjoy Christmas in Valencia.

Christmas plans in Valencia

Although Valencia might not be the first city that comes to mind when you think of Christmas, the Turia capital has more Christmas plans every year.

The Plaza del Ayuntamiento is the nerve center of Christmas in Valencia. The city's official Christmas tree, an ice skating rink, a carousel, etc., are usually set up there.

The square is not the only place in the city with Christmas spirit. In recent years, Christmas trees have been installed in the city's different neighborhoods. In addition, from the end of November, the streets are filled with lights (which can be seen from dusk) and poinsettias.

Business shop windows are also adorned with all kinds of Christmas details, and parks and squares such as the Parc Central or the Plaza del Mercado Central and the Lonja are transformed into Christmas markets with typical gastronomic products like turrones or polvorones, gifts, and entertainment and activities for the whole family.

A good Christmas plan in Valencia is to have a hot chocolate (or an appetizer) at the Mercado de Colón, which features one of the most beautiful trees (and Christmas decorations in general) in the city.

During these dates, activities for children are organized in Valencia. ExpoJove (at Feria Valencia) is a classic. An event dedicated to children with all kinds of recreational activities. On the other hand, in the area near the port, the Christmas Fair is set up every year, with attractions, tombolas, and activities for all tastes.

In Valencia, as in many Spanish cities, setting up the Nativity scene is part of the Christmas tradition. We can find Nativity scenes on the streets as well as in museums, shopping centers, or iconic places. A good family Christmas plan is to take a “Nativity scene route” to discover artistic gems. One of the most important is the one at the city hall (located in its Crystal Hall), which is over 40 square meters and has 100 figures. Also, the Neapolitan Nativity scene at the National Museum of Ceramics and many more.

Welcoming the New Year in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento is a great plan. You can start the year with the 12 chimes and the 12 grapes accompanied by other Valencians to have a year of good luck. Afterward, there are usually public parties until late into the night.

On the eve of Three Kings' Day, a grand parade is celebrated in Valencia before the most magical night of the year. The route may vary, but it usually starts at the port (where the Kings from the East disembark) and passes through the main streets of the center until it reaches the Plaza del Ayuntamiento.

If you want to enjoy Christmas in Valencia, you can stay at Sea You Apartamentos Port Saplaya, from where you can enjoy the different Christmas plans in Valencia with the comfort that these dates deserve.

Beach in winter

View of a quiet beach in winter with clear sky.
Some people think that beach destinations are only for summer. However, the beach in winter is also a good plan . At Apartamentos Port Saplaya , we love spending the winter on the seafront. That's why today we're going to talk about plans for the beach in winter.

Why go to the beach in winter

The first reason that comes to mind is that it is cheaper . Being low season, both transportation and accommodation are usually more accessible, and there are usually more offers . This makes it possible for all kinds of people to enjoy a beach holiday.
The next reason is also quite obvious. The beach in winter is practically empty. This will allow you to disconnect with the waves as a backdrop .
If the beach in question is on the Mediterranean coast, you can also enjoy magnificent temperatures . In Valencia and Port Saplaya, temperatures are moderate all year round. Perhaps not so much for wearing a bikini, but for spending a pleasant time on the sand.
If you still find it difficult to make up your mind, this last reason will give you the perfect excuse: well-being . Being close to nature provides multiple health benefits, including exposure to the sun (which provides vitamin D), breathing fresh air, walking on the sand... In addition, your rest will improve since being close to the sea reduces stress and facilitates relaxation by raising serotonin levels.

Beach plans in winter

The beach in winter can be both a relaxing and adventurous experience , depending on how you plan or approach your vacation.
On the one hand, if you feel like disconnecting, there is nothing better than a walk along the beach; alone or with your family or your dog. The relaxing sound of the sea, the fresh breeze, the tranquility, the natural beauty... all have advantages.
Having a picnic on the sand on a sunny winter day can also be a great way to spend a day on vacation. Prepare your favorite food in your apartment or order it and enjoy a meal with a special flavor in front of the sea.
Beach destinations generally allow us to enjoy nature : from marine fauna to birds, shells, etc. Take advantage of these days of relaxation to reconnect with nature with activities such as bird watching and even photography.
It can also be a good time to resume habits such as reading or unleash your creativity by building sand castles.
If you prefer a more active holiday, the beach in winter allows you to practice sports such as yoga, running and even water sports such as paddle surfing or surfing (with a good wetsuit) and even fly a kite.
Finally, you can take advantage of the fact that the beaches are usually almost empty to enjoy yourself with your pet. The rules on dog beaches are more lax in winter because the beaches are usually empty. By being respectful and always keeping an eye on your pet, you can enjoy a pleasant time with it.
If you are thinking of a winter beach getaway, consider Port Saplaya and our apartments as the ideal option. Here you will find amenities all year round: terrace with sea view, heating, kitchen, large shared spaces and, in addition, proximity to the city, but with the tranquility of a small coastal town. The beach in winter is the perfect getaway.

To start, plan your trip in advance . This is especially important if you are travelling during the high season to avoid last-minute surprises. We also recommend finding out about the weather for both clothing and the plans you can make at the destination or at different times of the day.

When planning your itinerary or activities during your trip, keep in mind everyone's tastes and needs . Don't plan a whole day of museums because the kids will surely get tired. Combine cultural activities with more fun ones so that everyone can enjoy each day.

Be flexible , especially with small children, but generally with everyone. Plan to leave early if you have to be somewhere at a certain time. With other activities, keep flexible schedules to avoid stressful situations that lead to unnecessary disputes between family members.

Take a basic first aid kit with you and keep track of the nearest health centres. You probably won't need it, but it will give you peace of mind and will help you deal with minor unforeseen events such as a stomach ache or a headache that could hinder your holiday.

History of Port Saplaya

Port Saplaya is a small fishing village just 4 kilometres from Valencia that no one should miss on their visit to Valencia. In addition, you can stay there with us, at Apartamentos Port Saplaya . However, there are many people interested in knowing the history of Port Saplaya.

What is Port Saplaya?

The area known as the Little Venice of Valencia is a mainly residential area that belongs to the municipality of Alboraya (Valencia), located 2 kilometres from the municipality, in the northwest area. The census population has been around 2,000 inhabitants in recent years and is known for its colourful architecture, its peculiar urban planning and its beaches.

Origin of Port Saplaya

This enclave, which is today almost better known than Alboraya, the municipality to which it belongs, was born as a residential area in the 70s . Initially conceived as a second residence area, there are more and more continuous inhabitants in the area, although it continues to experience an increase in the summer months.

The project was born from the collaboration between entrepreneurs and landowners. These owners were, for the most part, tiger nut producers (to make the well-known tiger nut horchata ) that they made use of on the land near the sea. At that time, as we have mentioned, the coast was full of fields, so the beaches were not at all accessible.

The project was inspired by the urban planning of the French Riviera and the Italian Riviera and was conceived as an inland port with access to the sea. A port surrounded by individual houses where each resident could have their boat docked at their doorstep. This vision was a revolution in urban planning at the time.

This small dock is integrated into docks surrounded by warm-coloured terraced houses. This unusual urban development is committed to pedestrian mobility and the tranquillity of the residents without losing sight of the Mediterranean. The complex is distributed in two squares, open on one side and porticoed on the other three. The promenades are separated in two by the opening of the port, which accesses the interior of the development. Motor vehicles can only travel on the street surrounding the complex from where the underground garage can be accessed.

Staying at Port Saplaya is the perfect way to enhance your visit to Valencia, as it allows you to combine the city with the relaxation of sleeping near the sea. Wake up with the feeling of relaxation you are looking for on your holiday at Apartamentos Port Saplaya , just 4 km from Valencia city centre.

On this one-day route through Valencia, our goal is to enjoy the city by combining gastronomy and iconic buildings with nature and the historic center .

Staying at Sea You Apartamentos Port Saplaya is the ideal option for visiting Valencia as it will allow you to combine urban tourism with the relaxation of having a base on the beach, and also in a place as magical as Port Saplaya .

What to see in Valencia in one day

In this short guide we have designed a route to discover Valencia in one day. This way, you can make the most of your visit to Valencia whether you are passing through or just want to spend a day of your summer holidays in Port Saplaya.

Start your day with a good Valencian breakfast that will fill you with energy for the rest of the day . It is a sandwich with all kinds of ingredients accompanied by a salad, peanuts, olives or something similar, a drink (some people start the day strong and opt for a beer) and a coffee (ideally the one known as cremaet ).

There are many places where you can enjoy it: from the more typical places in each neighbourhood to others with a more gourmet style. The importance that Valencians give to this is such that there are even profiles on Instagram dedicated to recommending bars for lunch.

Once we have the energy to the max, it is the perfect time to discover the historic centre of Valencia . We recommend starting the Valencia in one day route at the Valencia Cathedral . You cannot leave without going up to the Micalet (the tower of the cathedral) and enjoying the views of the entire city. Of course, to get there you have to climb 207 steps, but it will be worth it.

As you go down, you can continue discovering the El Carmen neighbourhood, passing through Plaza de la Virgen and walking down Calle Caballeros (where you will find everything from the headquarters of the Generalitat to all kinds of historic buildings such as theatres and palaces). Getting lost in the narrow streets of this neighbourhood and discovering buildings or even street art is a must on any visit to Valencia.

On this walk, you will come across the Central Market and the Silk Exchange (declared a World Heritage Site) in another of the city's most iconic squares. You can enter the Central Market, one of the largest in Europe, to enjoy the local bustle and take the opportunity to buy fresh produce.

The visit to the historic centre ends at the Torres de Serrano, ancient gates of the walled city that are preserved in very good condition and are the site of iconic events of the Valencian fallas such as the cridà.
From here we recommend you head to the emblematic City of Arts and Sciences. You can get there by bus or taxi or by taking a walk or bike through the Turia Garden , the urban park that occupies the space where the Turia River flowed.

Once in the City of Arts, take a stroll around the complex. You can also visit the spaces that interest you, although most of them will take you a little while and we recommend dedicating a full day to them (especially the Oceanogràfic).

When you feel hunger coming on again, it's time to enjoy the Valencian delicacy par excellence: paella . It's sure to be excellent in almost every restaurant in the city where you order it. You can deviate a little from the route to enjoy it near the sea (in Patacona) or even in El Palmar, a town near La Albufera that's typically populated by fishermen and farmers.

Depending on where you decide to eat, you can either visit La Albufera and enjoy the sunset there or return to the central area to discover the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, the Estación del Norte (and its modernist architecture) and take a walk through the shopping area. At the end of Calle de Colón and Don Juan de Austria is the Mercado de Colón , an old market converted into a gastronomic centre where you can have an aperitif and even dine in one of its restaurants such as those of the well-known chef Ricard Camarena.

Practical tips Valencia in a day

Finally, we would like to highlight some practical tips for this one-day route through Valencia:
  • One of the best ways to get around Valencia is by bike, as there are bike lanes all over the city, by public transport or on foot. There are many bike rental places and also some public bikes (Valenbisi).
  • Valencia has a pleasant climate all year round, but temperatures can be high in summer. Bring water and sun protection if you visit the city from May to October.

Extra Recommendations

This itinerary is designed so you can see the highlights of Valencia in a single day, but if you have more time, we recommend spending at least two days to explore more calmly .

On this “extra” day you can take advantage of the opportunity to visit the interior of historic buildings, museums (both the most famous ones and more curious ones such as the L'Íber Museum ) and natural parks in the city of Valencia.

La ermita dels peixets

Near Sea You Apartamentos Port Saplaya you can enjoy a hermitage with an unparalleled history and very picturesque architecture . The Hermitage of Peixets is one of the hidden treasures of Alboraya .

Legend of the Peixets hermitage

The name of the hermitage, which literally means “the hermitage of the little fishes” comes from the legend to which it refers. It is also known as the Hermitage of Our Lady of Miracles.

Legend has it that around the year 1348, an inhabitant of Almàssera was on the verge of death and called the priest of Alboraya so he could confess before his time came.

The priest was walking along the Carraixet ravine, but fell into the water. In the accident, he lost the box of hosts as he had to get out of the water quickly to save his life. When he got out and saw the situation, the priest decided to return home. However, shortly afterwards some farmers came to find him to tell him that three fish had collected the hosts . In this way, the priest was able to recover them and fulfil the sick man's last wishes.

Years later, a chapel was built in this place in commemoration. The chalice is preserved in the chapel. In Almàssera, a chapel was built, “Capella del Miracle dels Peixets” where the casket of the hosts is preserved.

The miracle is commemorated with a pilgrimage on Pentecost Monday from the village to the hermitage. Furthermore, that is the only day on which the interior can be visited.

Location and architecture of the Ermita dels peixets

The hermitage is located on the right bank of the Carraixet ravine , on the seashore, where the miracle is believed to have occurred. It is a unique natural landscape, the perfect place for an excursion or a walk with family or friends.

This small chapel was built in 1907 in the neo-Gothic style and has a rectangular floor plan. The façade is divided vertically into three parts separated by buttresses and topped with decorative pinnacles. The central part is wider and is where the entrance door is located.

On the main altar we can see a ceramic panel depicting the miracle that the hermitage honours. This panel is surrounded by marble supported by two columns. The interior is covered by a brick barrel vault. The hermitage is considered a cultural asset by the Generalitat Valenciana.

Importance and controversy The hermitage of Peixets

As with any tradition or legend, there is some controversy between the two towns involved. The inhabitants of Almàssera maintain that there were two fish in the legend and in Alboraya there were three (each with its corresponding host). For this reason, the commemorative works in the respective towns have a different number of fish .

The Hermitage of Peixets is located on the path of different routes or greenways such as Via Xurra. Its proximity to the town of Alboraya and Port Saplaya make it a place to go to spend a pleasant afternoon. It is a short drive or bike ride or a pleasant walk away to enjoy the coastal scenery. It is a very simple route and is well signposted. In addition, there is an area with tables and benches ideal for eating something.

Dog-friendly beaches in Valencia

At Sea You Apartamentos Port Saplaya we firmly believe that holidays are for spending with the family, and that includes pets. That's why today we want to talk about dog-friendly beaches near Valencia.

Unfortunately, the Coastal Law prohibits dogs on the beaches during the summer season. Therefore, if we want to fully enjoy our holidays with our pets, we must look for specific beaches that allow bathers and their pets to enjoy themselves.

If you are one of those people who travel with your pet and you like to enjoy the outdoors with it, we bring you a compilation of beaches near Valencia that can be accessed with pets without any problem.

Pet-friendly beaches in Valencia and surrounding areas

Luckily, the Valencian Community is one of the Spanish regions with the most pet-friendly beaches. However, most of them are in the provinces of Castellón and Alicante. In the province of Valencia we can only find three. The good news is that they are all relatively close to the city of Valencia.

Dog beach in Pinedo

Pinedo is one of the towns in the metropolitan area of Valencia. Located south of the city on the edge of the port, it has a pet-friendly beach 100 metres long and about 30 metres wide. From Port Saplaya it takes just 15 minutes by car.

This pet-friendly area is only open during the bathing season (from June 1 to September 15) at limited times. Despite these minor restrictions, it is one of the most highly rated areas and users are so interested that the area available has recently been expanded.

El Puig pet beach

Puig de Santa María, 18 km north of the city of Valencia (and 10 kilometres from Port Saplaya) has the pet-friendly beach of La Torreta, Santa Elvira, which has been pet-friendly since 2016.

It is a sandy and pebble beach 100 metres long and 50 metres wide and is not very frequented by bathers without pets. A very quiet beach and ideal for spending a relaxing time (or a day).

Alboraya dog beach

This dog beach is located just a few meters from our apartments, very close to La Patacona beach in Valencia.

Until recently, Els Peixets beach had the area designated for dogs. However, its location has recently been changed to the southern area of Alboraya, located between the mouth of the Carraixet river and that of the La Marquesa irrigation canal.

Although the space is not very large, it is a perfect area for your pet to enjoy and run around in the sand.

Rules for enjoying pet-friendly beaches

We all like to share moments with our pets outdoors. However, in order to be able to live with other beach users, certain rules must be followed to ensure everyone's comfort .

Some of these rules are:
  • The pet area is delimited, it is not allowed to leave that area with pets.
  • It is compulsory to collect excrement. There are bins specifically provided for this purpose.
  • Dogs must be kept on a leash and potentially dangerous ones must be muzzled.
  • The pet owner is responsible for any damage caused by the pet.
  • The animal must have (and carry) the corresponding documentation in order (veterinary passport and identification card).
  • The passage area must be respected: 6 meters from the shore and respect other users.
  • Most of these beaches are not supervised, so swimming is not recommended.

Tips for enjoying pet-friendly beaches

The main advice for enjoying pet-friendly beaches is to check the rules before entering and make sure to check the appropriate sign that pets are allowed. Otherwise, you could face significant fines.

Once this is clear, it is time to think about your pet's safety . You should keep an eye on your pet at all times, especially if he is not used to going to the beach or living with other pets or people. For example, if you go swimming, pay attention to your pet, both because of the waves (especially if he does not know how to swim very well) and because of possible jellyfish stings, etc.

On the other hand, be careful with sand , whether it is very hot or if your dog decides to eat it. It can be harmful to his digestive system! Also watch out if he digs in the sand for anything he can find. For example, cigarette butts, fishing hooks, glass...

The rest of the tips for your stay at the beach with pets depend on each pet. For example, if your dog does not have much fur or is very sensitive to heat, we recommend that you bring an umbrella or sunscreen. Water is essential (with its corresponding water bowl) and there are water toys for dogs that can make your dog enjoy it much more.

When finished, we recommend that you give it a bath in fresh water to remove any remaining salt or sand .

With these tips and if you follow the rules of each dog beach, you can spend an unforgettable day enjoying the good weather with your pet. If you are looking for pet-friendly accommodation near Valencia, take a look at our website .

How to get around Valencia

How to get around Valencia

Valencia is an accessible city, with an excellent public transport network that allows you to move comfortably both through its urban area and its surroundings, and a size that is not too large, allowing you to get around much of the city on foot. From Sea You Apartamentos Port Saplaya we have compiled the best transport options in Valencia to get around like a local during your visit to the capital of the Turia.

Getting around Valencia by public transport

The public transport system in Valencia is modern and efficient. Among the urban options, the metro, buses, and trams stand out.

The metro and tram network connects different points of the city and reaches municipalities in the metropolitan area and the coast. For this reason, they are a good option for traveling from the center to more distant areas, such as the City of Arts and Sciences or the beaches. However, since it connects the entire city, you can move from your accommodation to the center or vice versa. In addition, the Valencia metro is easy to use, with well-marked stations and lines that reach Port Saplaya (to Alboraya, nearby) and other points of interest. Weekday hours are more limited (ending around 11 at night), but there is more service on weekends until later.

The buses of the Municipal Transport Company (EMT) are ideal for exploring the city and reaching places where the metro does not go, such as La Albufera, one of the best places to watch the sunset in Valencia. The different lines cover the city extensively, including tourist areas, and their schedules extend from early in the morning until night. In addition, night buses are very useful for getting around if you go out at night to leisure areas such as Ruzafa or El Carmen. There are also buses from other companies (usually yellow) that connect Valencia with towns in the metropolitan area.

Regarding fares, Valencia has several types of tickets and transport Monthly Passes. The rechargeable Móbilis card allows you to use the metro, tram, and buses with unified fares. There is also the Valencia Tourist Card, ideal for visitors, which offers unlimited travel for one, two, or three days and includes discounts on museums and tourist attractions.

Getting around Valencia by bicycle

Getting around by bicycle is one of the best ways to enjoy Valencia, a city that is strongly committed to sustainable mobility.

Valencia has a network of bike lanes throughout the city that includes routes in the Turia Park, the City of Arts and Sciences, and even to the beach. This makes it safe and pleasant to travel by bicycle. In addition, the city is practically flat and has more than 300 days of sunshine a year. Therefore, renting a bicycle or using Valenbisi is an ideal option.

Valenbisi is the public bicycle rental system with stations spread throughout the city. It is very convenient for tourists as you can leave the bicycle at the most convenient station to discover that area. In addition, it is an economical and environmentally friendly option.

Getting around Valencia by motorbike

In the city, you can find per-minute motorbike rental systems like Yego or Acciona. This is especially useful for specific trips or at times or in areas with less frequent public transport. It is also for those who wish to avoid the commitments of a traditional rental.

Getting around Valencia on foot

One of the best ways to explore the old town (or Valencia in general) is simply by taking a walk. The historic center is quite compact and all the streets have charm: pedestrian areas, squares, shops, and markets. Places like the Plaza de la Virgen, the Central Market, and the El Carmen neighborhood are enjoyed much more on foot, and it is the best way to discover the secrets of the capital of the Turia.

Final tips for getting around Valencia

Plan your trips, especially if you have a set schedule like a guided tour or a flight to catch. Although the city is small and distances are not very long, there are certain moments or rush hours when minor traffic jams may occur.

Check information with applications like Google Maps or the EMT application for routes, schedules, or public transport frequency in real time.

Opt for sustainable mobility options whenever you can. Valencia is the European Green Capital in 2024, so it is a city very committed to sustainable mobility.

Therefore, we will have to go from where the 112 leaves us (for example, Primado Reig) to La Porta de la Mar and there take bus 24 or 25.

Bus schedules may vary depending on the time of year , so we recommend checking them beforehand.

If you want to plan a full day of cycling, we will tell you the route you should follow. Note: it is a relatively long journey suitable for prepared people. Therefore, the estimated time (for each journey) is about 2 hours.

The route is very pretty as you will enjoy the views of the beaches of La Patacona and La Malvarosa. When you pass these beaches, continue towards La Marina until you reach Tinglado 5, where you will have to turn right towards Nazaret and then continue towards La Punta, cross the river and head towards the Pinedo road (CV-500) and, passing through El Saler, you will reach the La Albufera viewpoint.

Tips for enjoying La Albufera

Once in La Albufera there are many things you can do. One of the most common is to take a boat ride to admire the beauty of the park from the water. These tours are given by local guides who will tell you everything you need to know.

If you like birdwatching, La Albufera and its wetlands are the ideal place to do so. Bring your binoculars and camera and enjoy!

Enjoy a paella (or any other typical dish) in the restaurants of El Palmar. El Palmar is the closest town to the park, which is typically occupied by fishermen and farmers. There you will find many typical Valencian restaurants where you can indulge yourself.

We hope this guide has been useful for you in planning your trip from Port Saplaya to Albufera! If you are looking for accommodation in Port Saplaya, take a look at our apartments .

The little Venice of Valencia, Port Saplaya

Did you know that Port Saplaya is known as “the little Venice of Valencia”? The canals and colours of its facades have a lot to do with this. We will tell you a little about the reasons why it is known as such.

Why Port Saplaya is the little Venice of Valencia

The colours of the facades and the port and the canals that run into the city with moorings for boats are the two main characteristics for which Port Saplaya is known as the little Venice of Valencia.

The tones of the façades (reddish, pastel and ochre) were chosen by Agnès Borel, interior designer and President of Libertas 7, the company that owns the Port Saplaya Apartments . She was inspired by the villages of the French Riviera and the Italian Riviera, mainly Port Grimaud in the Gulf of Saint Tropez.

The sun enhances these colours and makes them reflect in the water of the canals to create an almost magical postcard.

The residential atmosphere and the urban port are the final touch so that, as soon as you see Port Saplaya, some people think of beautiful Venice.

Furthermore, the construction project (started in the 70s and executed in the 80s) planned low-rise buildings and articulated by two squares, open on one side and porticoed on the other three, located at each end of the town, in the purest Venetian style.

Reasons to visit the little Venice of Valencia

The main reason for many to visit Port Saplaya is the tranquillity . A holiday destination where, without being too far from the city of Valencia (4 km), you can breathe a tranquillity that makes it the perfect place to escape and enjoy your holidays.

On the other hand, the charm of Port Saplaya is unrivalled. Any time of year is good, but in summer it is even more special. In addition to the beach, in summer there are stalls, summer cinema and many more activities .

The 600 metres of beaches (which you will have front-line views of from our apartments) are another reason. Two semi-urban beaches of golden sand where you can sunbathe, relax or do all kinds of outdoor activities. You will also find a promenade along which you can take a stroll before dinner at any of the restaurants in Port Saplaya.

The Central Market of Valencia

Mercat Central de Valencia

The Mercat Central de Valencia (Valencia Central Market) is, as its name suggests, the main market in the city. It is the market where both individuals and businesses go to shop on a day-to-day basis, as it is the best place to find fresh, high-quality food.

It was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest and an ethnological property in 2007 and is, without a doubt, an essential stop on your visit to Valencia. From Sea You Apartamentos Port Saplaya, we want to encourage you to visit it, so we are going to briefly tell you everything you need to know about the Mercat Central de Valencia.

History of the Mercat Central de Valencia

The space where the market is located has been, since the founding of the city of Valencia, the usual site for street markets due to it being a central and open area. In fact, the Silk Exchange (Lonja de la Seda) and other buildings such as the Market Council and the Church of Santos Juanes are located there, as well as the Valencia City Hall very close by.

In 1839, what is considered the germ of the current market, the New Market, was inaugurated right there, which, however, was outdoors. Later, at the end of the 19th century, seeing that this was insufficient, the City Council called for a competition for the construction of a market worthy of the city.

In 1910, the project was finally assigned to Alejandro Soler and Francisco Guardia. Construction began a few years later and finished in 1928. The construction was not easy, as there were controversies, budgetary problems, social conflicts, economic crises...

Due to this long construction time, the market has several anniversaries, such as the anniversary of the inauguration of the demolition, in which Alfonso XIII was present, the laying of the first stone, the opening to the public...

Architecture of the Mercat Central de Valencia

The Valencia Central Market is in a clearly modernist style, with allegorical ornamentation related to nature inside. In fact, it is considered one of the masterpieces of Valencian modernism. A spectacularly striking building that integrates perfectly with the others it shares the square with. The architectural style perfectly represents the city at that time, a city that was moving towards commercial progress but felt proud of its orchard (huerta).

The building, with an area of more than 8,000 square meters, has a basilica floor plan and has doors to different squares and streets. It is crowned by iron, glass, and ceramic domes and two weather vanes (the parrot and the fish). The domes allow natural light, very abundant in Valencia, to enter the interior space perfectly, creating a bright and welcoming atmosphere and highlighting the interior architectural beauty.

The interior is distributed in an orderly manner in wide corridors adorned with elegant arcades and ornate columns. This facilitates interaction with the products and the merchants. On the other hand, the façade has ornamental details, floral reliefs, and traditional tiles with geometric motifs. In 2004, a comprehensive rehabilitation took place with a complete restoration of the building.

How to visit the Mercat Central de Valencia

The Mercat Central de Valencia deserves to be one of the stops on your trip to Valencia as it is much more than the largest fresh produce market in Europe. Also known as "the cathedral of the senses," it is a place that anchors the city and represents the Valencian people both architecturally and culturally.

The market has been evolving over time and today, in addition to fresh food stalls, you can also find a small percentage of non-food items, as well as stalls for prepared dishes and catering services. You can visit it from Monday to Saturday from 7:30 to 15:00.

Other parts of the cultural heritage are the popular festivals of Alboraya . Many festivals are celebrated in Alboraya, such as the Fallas, but the main festivals are, as is common, the most popular.

Alboraya's main festivals

The patron saint festivities of Alboraya are celebrated between the last week of June and the first week of July. This festival is dedicated to the Santísimo Cristo de la Salud , the patron saint of the city, whose feast day is on July 10.

On this holiday, the patron saint is honoured through religious events such as masses, processions, etc., as well as cultural or traditional events that help to create a sense of community among the inhabitants of Alboraya.

Folk shows, food fairs, activities for children... the events are very varied and take place mainly in the historic part of Alboraya or in the fairgrounds. People can easily move between both areas on foot as they are no more than 10 minutes away.

Among the activities of the Alboraya festivities we can find processions, blessing of animals and vehicles, but also farmers' lunch, entrances of Moors and Christians, concerts or children's activities. The different groups of the city also collaborate by organizing, for example, sporting events, concerts or dinners for senior citizens.

Other relevant celebrations in Alboraya

In addition to the patron saint festivals, other festivals are celebrated in Alboraya: the Carrer Cabanyal Festival, the Corpus Christi Festival, the Els Peixets Festival, the Immaculate Conception Festival, the Patacona Festival, the Major Festivals, the Milagrosa Festival, the Santa Bárbara Festival, the Santa Cecilia Festival.

In Port Saplaya in particular, the Fiestas del Carmen are celebrated. They also take place in the month of July (around July 16). There is a competition of music bands, inflatables, sobaquillo dinners, a water festival and much more. In addition, the image of the Virgen del Carmen goes out in a seafaring procession through the canals and the marina of Port Saplaya.

San Juan: origin and how it is celebrated in Valencia

The night of San Juan is, without a doubt, one of the most magical nights of the year. It is celebrated in many places around the world, especially on the coast, on the night of June 23 to 24. In this post, from Apartamentos Port Saplaya we want to talk specifically about how San Juan is celebrated in Valencia .

Origin of the celebration of San Juan

Despite the name of the festival, its origin is of pagan origin . There are several theories about it. On the one hand, in Celtic culture the arrival of the summer solstice was celebrated by lighting bonfires to ask for the blessing of land, men and cattle. Also, in ancient civilizations, which ruled their lives by the sun, they lit large bonfires to give strength to the sun, which from this date onwards reduces the hours of light.

Whatever the origin, the truth is that both refer to the solstice or the arrival of summer, which, as we all know, is on June 21. So why is Saint John celebrated on the 24th? The truth is that a few years later , Christianity adopted this holiday to honor Saint John the Baptist , one of its most important figures. According to the Old Testament, Zechariah, the father of Saint John the Baptist, ordered a bonfire to be lit to announce the miracle of the birth of his son.

How San Juan is celebrated in Valencia

On the night of San Juan , the beaches of the city and the entire Valencian coast are filled with people . The most popular plan is to meet up with friends and family on the beach to have dinner, light a bonfire and welcome the summer. Some dance, others carry out some rituals to get rid of negativity and welcome the summer.

Fire and water are the main protagonists of the night. Each group of friends lights a bonfire (whenever permitted) in which they “burn” all the bad things to face the summer with new energy. There are different rituals, some burn papers in which wishes are made, others burn the bad things of the year. The bonfire has to be jumped over 7 times to bring luck and protection all year long. At 12 o'clock, you will see that everyone joins together on the seashore to jump over the waves (7 waves). In this way, they seek to leave the bad things behind (with fire) and welcome the good things by purifying themselves with the sea water.

The main beaches where San Juan is celebrated in Valencia are Malvarrosa and Patacona. The conditions depend on the legislation of each year. Some years the city council provides the firewood for the bonfires and, as in any Valencian celebration, fireworks cannot be missed.

If you decide to celebrate the night of San Juan in Valencia, check the public transport timetables (they are usually extended that night) and leave with plenty of time to look for parking if you are going by car.
Also, remember to leave the beach as you found it and always comply with the safety measures applied by the authorities. Some years, June 24 is a public holiday, so you can enjoy the night of San Juan without worries.

Celebrating San Juan in Port Saplaya

The celebration of San Juan in Port Saplaya may not be as crowded as on the beaches of the city of Valencia. However, all you need is a beach and the will to spend an unforgettable San Juan night . At the Port Saplaya Apartments you have the sea in front of you, so you can plan your celebration with the comfort of having your "home" just a few steps away.

Horchata from Alboraya

Horchata or, in Valencian, orxata , is one of the drinks of Valencia, originating specifically in Alboraya, the municipality to which Port Saplaya belongs, where the Port Saplaya Apartments are located.

Horchata is a drink made from tiger nuts, a tuber typical of the Valencian garden, specifically from Horta Nord, thanks to the special characteristics of the area in terms of soil and climate. It is traditionally considered a drink with countless health benefits.

Origin of horchata

There are different legends associated with the origin of horchata. Below, we share the one told by the Regulatory Council DO Chufa de Valencia

A young woman gave the King of Aragon, Jaume I, a sweet white drink to try. Jaume I liked it very much and asked: " Què és això? " (What is this?). The young woman replied: "It's tiger nut milk" to which the king replied: " Això no és llet, això es or xata! " (This is not milk, this is gold, my dear!).

The cultivation of tiger nuts dates back to the Egyptian civilisation, as the presence of tubers was found in sarcophagi and tombs of the first dynasties. From Egypt, the cultivation of tiger nuts spread throughout North Africa, reaching the Mediterranean area of the peninsula with the Islamic waves of the Middle Ages. There is written evidence that in the 13th century a refreshing drink called llet de xufes was already consumed, the predecessor of today's horchata.

Ingredients of horchata

In the preparation of horchata, the main ingredient is tiger nuts, which must be soaked for a few hours beforehand (between 6 and 8). Next, the tiger nuts are ground and mixed with a little water. Then, sugar, lemon peel and a little cinnamon are added and we continue stirring. Finally, we strain the mixture to obtain the horchata.

Valencia Tigernut DO

This organisation has been in charge of the 19 municipalities in the Horta Nord region since 1995 and is recognised by the European Union. Its mission is to ensure the quality of tiger nuts at each stage of production and to guarantee consumers that they are of Valencian origin.

If you want to enjoy an authentic horchata from Alboraya, the Port Saplaya Apartments are the ideal accommodation to live the Mediterranean life to the fullest. Take a look at our website and prepare your next vacation.

What to eat on the beach

There is no better summer plan than spending the day at the beach: enjoying the sun, the sand and the good weather. If you don't want to miss a minute of your day at the seaside, the ideal thing is to bring food to eat on the beach.

If we talk about requirements, it is recommended that beach recipes be easy to transport and eat . Obviously, this depends on the infrastructure we have: it is not the same to go to the beach with just a towel than if we bring a cooler and even chairs and a table.

That's why, from Apartamentos Port Saplaya we bring you some ideas for recipes to eat on the beach. Easy recipes so that you don't waste a lot of time in the kitchen , but enjoy a delicious meal.

Simple recipes to eat on the beach

Pasta salad

This is a typical dish for beach days for every family. It is a super quick and easy dish to cook that can be adapted to the tastes of all the people in the family or group of friends. There is no 100% defined recipe but below we will tell you our version . The ingredients are:

  • Pasta: dry and short pasta such as fusilli is recommended
  • Tomato
  • Cucumber
  • Corn
  • Tuna
  • Pitted Olives
  • Fresh cheese
  • Eggs
  • Oil, salt and pepper

Elaboration:

  1. Boiling the eggs: The time depends on how cooked they are, but the recommended time is around 9 minutes. After this time, place them in cold water to make peeling them easier.
  2. We cook the pasta. The amount recommended by each manufacturer, since it will be the base of our dish, so there has to be enough.
  3. While the pasta and egg are cooking, we can cut the rest of the ingredients into the size that is most comfortable for us to eat. We can cut the tomato, cucumber and fresh cheese into small squares. We can cut the olives in half.
  4. We mix all the already cut ingredients (along with the egg, pasta, tuna and corn) and season. We recommend oil, salt and pepper, but you can also add mayonnaise. If you add mayonnaise, you will have to take a little more care in preserving the dish while it is on the beach.

If there are people in the group who don't like any of the ingredients, you can take it separately (pasta on one side and the rest of the ingredients in small tupperware) and assemble it to your liking at the time .

Potato omelette

The potato omelette is another classic that never fails . Easy to make and delicious cold. We don't know if there is anyone who doesn't know the recipe, but below we leave you our version. The only ingredients you will need are eggs, potatoes, oil and salt.

Elaboration:

  1. Peel and cut the potatoes into small pieces.
  2. Put plenty of oil in a frying pan and fry the potatoes in the oil at a medium temperature and add a little salt.
  3. Meanwhile, beat the eggs in a bowl with a pinch of salt.
  4. When the potatoes are soft, remove them from the heat, drain off any excess oil, and place them in the bowl with the egg to soak them well.
  5. Remove the oil from the pan (leaving only the minimum amount so that it does not stick to the pan).
  6. After a few minutes, pour the mixture into the pan over medium-high heat.
  7. When you see that it is cooking on the bottom, turn the omelette over with the help of the lid of the pan or a plate and remove it when it is at the point you prefer.

Country salad

This salad is also known as “ summer salad” and the name couldn’t be more apt. The country salad, with its creamy potato base, is wonderful when the heat is on. It is a simple but tasty dish.

Ingredients:

  • Potato
  • Chives
  • Tomato
  • Italian green pepper
  • Tuna
  • Pitted Olives
  • Red pepper
  • Eggs
  • Oil, salt and pepper

Elaboration:

We will start by boiling the potatoes and eggs in plenty of water for about 9 minutes (the eggs) and 15 or 20 minutes for the potatoes (depending on the size until you can pierce them with a knife without difficulty). We take it out and let it cool.

While they are cooling, you can wash and cut the vegetables (peppers, spring onions, tomatoes). Mix them all in a bowl with the chopped olives. When the potatoes and eggs have cooled, peel them and cut them into small pieces and mix them with the rest of the ingredients, add the tuna and dress the salad.

Wraps

This is a slightly different version of a typical sandwich . Like the rest of the recipes we have shared today, it can be customized to suit everyone's taste. They are a kind of rolled sandwiches.

Below, we leave you a recipe for a simple but delicious chicken wrap. The ingredients are as follows:

  • Wheat flour tortillas
  • Cheddar
  • York or braised ham
  • Turkey or chicken breast
  • Lettuce
  • Tomato
  • Tomato
  • Mayonnaise

The preparation is very simple but the result is excellent:

  1. Season the chicken or turkey breast with salt and pepper and cook it in the pan until it is to your liking. Add a slice of cheese on top just before it is finished cooking so that it melts. You can also coat the meat in breadcrumbs to give it a crispy finish that breaks up with the rest of the ingredients in the wrap.
  2. Meanwhile, cut the rest of the ingredients such as tomatoes or lettuce to have them ready.
  3. Once the meat is done, spread the corn tortillas with a little mayonnaise or whatever sauce you like best so that it doesn't dry out.
  4. Add the meat and the rest of the ingredients (also the ham).
  5. Roll the tortilla tightly so that the contents do not leak out. You can store them like this or cut them into portions to have them ready.

If you are looking for an apartment with sea views and a few steps from the beach, Apartamentos Port Saplaya is an ideal option.

El Tribunal de les Aigües

Tribunal de les Aigües Valencia

The Water Tribunal (Tribunal de les Aigües) is one of those things you must see in Valencia if your visit allows it. It is not a historic building or an iconic park, but rather a traditional act that encompasses many parts of Valencian culture. From Sea You Apartamentos Port Saplaya, we explain what the Water Tribunal is, how to see it, and why it is so important.

What is the Water Tribunal

The Water Tribunal of Valencia (Tribunal de les Aigües) is one of the oldest institutions in Europe, a customary court (based on custom) that regulates the use of water in the Valencian orchards (huerta).

It is said that its origin dates back to the Muslim era (8th to 13th centuries) and was created to ensure the fair and efficient distribution of water, essential for the region's agriculture.

This tradition is still maintained today, and every Thursday at noon, the representatives meet at the Apostles' Gate of the Valencia Cathedral to resolve disputes related to the irrigation of the ditches.

A millennial institution whose rulings, delivered orally, are binding. The court is composed of eight syndics, each representing one of the main ditches of the Valencian orchards. Every week, farmers can come to the court to resolve disputes over water use. The hearings are held in Valencian and in a simple format: those affected explain their case and the syndics issue a ruling immediately, resolving conflicts in an agile and transparent manner.

Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

The Water Tribunal was declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2009. It is much more than an agricultural justice body; it is a symbol of Valencian identity and tradition.

Its permanence throughout the centuries reflects the respect for the natural environment and the sense of community that revolves around the orchards. For this reason, we recommend seeing the court in action as a unique experience to witness how ancestral laws are applied in the 21st century, serving as an example of how the collective management of natural resources can work efficiently and fairly. It is also a reminder of the importance of preserving traditions for future generations.

El Cabañal: the fishing district of Valencia

El Cabañal Valencia

El Cabañal is a neighborhood in the city of Valencia that stands out for its architectural value, with many representations of its past as a fishing village. This area offers an authentic traditional experience where life moves at a different pace. In recent years, the neighborhood has been renovated and has gained popularity, with many plans and places worth walking through. From Sea You Apartamentos Port Saplaya, we bring you the perfect route through the El Cabañal neighborhood, a must-see on your visit to Valencia.

Route through El Cabañal

If you are staying at Sea You Hotel, right at the door are the Atarazanas (Shipyards), the first stop on the route through El Cabañal. The old shipyards, dating back to the 14th century, are a symbol of the maritime history of Valencia. It currently hosts temporary exhibitions and cultural events. Its Gothic structure and stone walls stand out to any guest of our hotel.

Next, we recommend taking a walk through the streets of El Cabañal, which maintain the fishing spirit and are characterized by their colorful houses with modernist tiles. Many of these facades are protected for their high value as an example of the modernist and traditional Valencian style. Some recommended streets are Calle Rosario or Calle Escalante.

Make a stop during your walk through the neighborhood at the El Cabañal Market, where you can immerse yourself in the daily life of the neighborhood while enjoying fresh, local products or an authentic Valencian esmorzar (mid-morning snack).

The neighborhood has other buildings like the Fishermen's Guild Hall (Lonja de Pescadores), which is of historical relevance to the society of El Cabañal. Built in 1904 for the neighborhood's boat masters' association, it is a modernist-style building that was even an inspiration for Sorolla in many of his works and was also used as a hospital, housing for fishermen, a prison, etc. Currently, it cannot be visited as some of its parts are private residences, but be sure to take a look at the exterior during your walk through El Cabañal.

If you take the route back to the hotel along the Promenade, at the end you will find the Veles e Vents building. This is the modern icon of La Marina de Valencia. Designed by David Chipperfield and Fermín Vázquez, this building is a masterpiece of contemporary architecture located in the heart of the port of Valencia. Built for the 32nd edition of the America's Cup, this building symbolizes the connection between the sea and the city.

Take the opportunity to visit the Port Sheds (Tinglados del Puerto). These modernist sheds are an example of early 20th-century industrial architecture and an excellent place to walk and take photos, as they are decorated with brightly colored ceramics.

The last point on this tour is the Clock Building (Edificio del Reloj). Known as the "modernist jewel of the port," this 20th-century building was originally the office of the Port Works Board and today is a symbol of the port of Valencia and modernism. Its clock, visible from afar, is a perfect landmark for those strolling through the area.

Flavors of El Cabañal

In this neighborhood, we can find a wide gastronomic offer, especially boosted in recent years. Places like Mercabañal (an open-air gastronomic market with different food stalls) or Mercader offer varied culinary experiences in renovated and cozy spaces that maintain the spirit of the neighborhood. You can also find more traditional options like Casa Montaña or La Pascuala.

El Cabañal in summer

If you visit Valencia in the summer, you can also enjoy other plans like summer cinema at La Marina, boat trips, or surfing lessons. However, since Valencia has many sunny days a year, you can enjoy a bike ride through the neighborhood or a stroll along Las Arenas Beach at any time of the year.

Curiosities of Valencia

Curiosities of Valencia

Valencia is becoming increasingly important as a tourist destination, and it may seem that there is little left to discover. However, at Sea You Apartamentos Port Saplaya, as true locals, we are going to tell you 3 curiosities about Valencia.

3 things you didn't know about Valencia

The historical importance of Valencia

Valencia is currently the third most important city in Spain, but historically it has always been a very important city both culturally and economically.

From the Roman era when it was founded (2nd century BC) and named Valentia, which means "valor," to the 15th century, when it was the most populous and wealthy city in the Crown of Aragon. In fact, the 15th century is known as the Valencian Golden Age, a time when such important buildings as the Silk Exchange (Lonja de la Seda) were built.

In between, it was occupied by the Muslims and reconquered by James I. All of this history can be observed in its historic center, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for its architecture.

The bat as a symbol of the city

Have you noticed that the bat appears repeatedly in Valencia? On the city's coat of arms, the football team's emblem, on iconic buildings...

It is an animal highly honored by the Valencians because, according to legend, it was a bat that warned James I the Conqueror, waking him up just before an unexpected attack by the Muslims. Look closely when you walk around Valencia and you will find it in more places than you expect.

The largest urban park in Spain

You might think that this title would be held by El Retiro, but the truth is that the Turia Gardens, in addition to being the green lung that connects the city, is the largest park in Spain.

The Turia Gardens crosses the entire city from east to west. If you come to Valencia, you will surely see it, either by crossing one of its magnificent bridges or by visiting the City of Arts and Sciences (which is located at the end of it). By the way, this is one of the largest centers of culture and entertainment in Europe (larger than The Vatican).

The origin of the Turia Gardens dates back to what is known as the riuà, the flood in the 50s that flooded the city, causing one of the greatest disasters in its history.

After that, the Turia river, which crossed the city where the park is currently located, was drained and diverted, and its old riverbed converted into a beautiful park that includes everything from bike lanes, fountains, sports courts, children's play areas, etc. During your visit to Valencia, don't miss taking a walk or bike ride, having a picnic, or any other activity.

Crossing this garden and connecting the city center with the Mestalla neighborhood is the Bridge of Flowers, one of the most expensive to maintain. The flowers are changed several times a year so they are always in good condition, which entails a very high cost.

If you are planning a getaway to Valencia, take a look at our apartments for a perfect stay.

La Lonja de la Seda

Lonja de la Seda Valencia

The city of Valencia has so many historical buildings that it is difficult to choose just one. However, from Sea You Apartamentos Port Saplaya we have a soft spot for some of them. Among these is the Lonja de la Seda (Silk Exchange), which we are going to talk about below.

History of the Lonja de la Seda

The Lonja de la Seda (in Valencian Llotja de la Seda), also known as the Merchants' Exchange, is one of the symbols of Valencia's importance in the 15th century (the Valencian Golden Age) and its commercial splendor.

Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996, the Lonja was built at the end of the 15th century as the city's trade center. At that time, the silk trade was so relevant, with more than 20,000 people dedicated to the sector, that what was initially called the Merchants' Exchange became known as the Silk Exchange. This name has been maintained as a tribute to an industry that was so important in Valencia for centuries.

Located in the heart of the city, it was conceived as a replacement for the old exchange, which was already insufficient for the city's commercial activity. The textile trade made Valencia a mercantile center of the Mediterranean, and the Lonja was the showcase of this economic power.

Architecture of the Lonja de la Seda

The Lonja is one of the most characteristic architectural treasures of Valencia. Designed by Pere Compte (a disciple of the architect of the original project, Francesc Baldomar) and inspired by the one in Palma de Mallorca, it is an excellent representation of the European civil gothic style.

It occupies a rectangular area of almost 2,000 square meters and is divided into three sections: the Trading Hall, the Tower, and the Sea Consulate Pavilion, in addition to the garden or orange tree courtyard.

The Trading Hall, the heart of the Lonja, is a vast hall where commercial transactions were carried out. To convey that grandeur, it has eight helical columns that simulate trees, symbolizing the prosperity and growth of trade. These columns support the 17.5-meter-high ribbed vaults, which give the room monumentality. On the walls, you can read inscriptions in Latin that remind merchants of their duty not to act with greed.

The Tower, adjacent to the Trading Hall, housed the jail where merchants who did not pay their debts were locked up, as well as a chapel dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. Currently, it cannot be visited due to a lack of facilities.

Finally, the Sea Consulate was the space where mercantile trials were held. This institution was one of the first to regulate maritime trade in the Mediterranean. Architecturally, it has a rectangular floor plan and a Renaissance style.

The hewn stone façade, the sculptures and gargoyles, as well as the proportions of the doors and windows, reflect the splendor of the era.

Come to Port Saplaya: Bike route along the Vía Churra

That's what it's called, yes, that's how we are on the ground: the Xurra road.

It is a greenway that crosses the region of l'Horta Nord and is perhaps one of the busiest routes in Spain because it is so close to an urban center of 1,600,000 inhabitants, because of its short distance and its slight incline, which at end are the things that matter most when taking a bike ride. It is very quiet and well signposted, ideal to do it with children.

We will pass through a landscape of orchards, dotted with typical Valencian farmhouses that make up a farming model considered a unique heritage in Europe.

The route goes in a south-north direction , running from the outskirts of Valencia to Puçol . The route is carried out on paved or cement lanes, except for some short stretches of compacted earth. It is about 15 kilometers depending on where we start it in which you will get to know the towns of Alboraia, Almàssera, Meliana, Foios, Albalat del Sorells, Emperador, Museros, Pobla de Farnals, Rafelbunyol and Puçol.

It cannot be lost and from Port Saplaya it has a very easy access to Alboraya. Here you can look at the typical Valencian barracks, of which there are very few left, and you will find some along the route.

Continuing we will cross the Barranco de Carraixet , which passes near the town of Almàssera, to later take the perfectly marked and conditioned bike lane until we reach Meliana .
More or less at kilometer 12, the road disappears into an industrial estate, but there is no problem, you can continue along the estate in a straight line or cross a roundabout and continue along the bike path that is right next to a gas station.

Before reaching the final point of the route, already in the municipality of Puçol, you have to pass through the Barranco de Puçol . You will have to cross a beautiful bridge and finally you will reach the town.

The option for the return is to do it along the beach, although of course we can go back through the same place and stop to have a fresh horchata or eat at one of the restaurants that dot the entire route.

Come to Port Saplaya. Bicycle route along the Via Augusta.

Taking advantage of the fact that the Sun allows us to do other things as rewarding as being on our beautiful beach, we are going to go out and enjoy a bicycle tour around Port Saplaya, circulating along the longest Roman road in Hispania since it passes through the gate of our apartments.

The Via Augusta in Hispania

It has an approximate length of 1,500 km, bordering the entire Mediterranean, starting in Cádiz and passing through the current town of La Junquera in the Pyrenees, where it was extended by the Via Domitia , which bordered the coast of southern Gaul to Rome. It was the main axis of the road network in Roman times. Emperor Augustus gives it its name since he was in charge of repairing and completing it, around the years 8 and 2 BC. C., when it became an important communication and trade route between the cities and ports of the Mediterranean. Currently the N-IV N-420, N-340 and Autopista del Mediterráneo highways follow the same itinerary in many sections. In fact, in some sections of the current N-340 the Roman road was used until the beginning of the 20th century, being asphalted in the 1920s.

our route

It leaves from Port Saplaya along the seashore reaching Puzol beach. There we leave the beach to enter the town of Puzol and reach El Puig. We will continue along the bike path that runs between the Valencian orchard to our starting point in Port Saplaya.

High on the way

We will mainly pass through two points of interest where it will be worth making a stop that we can take advantage of for a refreshment with which to replenish our strength.

The "Marjal dels Moros" is a wetland located between the municipalities of Puzol and Sagunto. It is a protected area ZEPA (area of special protection for birds) cataloged by the European Union. If you also carry binoculars, you will surely be able to spot the large number of bird species that inhabit it, with a lot of luck you will even be able to see flamingos. They can be observed without being seen since there are camouflaged observation points. The route crosses the wooden paths that lead from the beach itself to the interior.

The second point of interest is the Monastery of Sant María de El Puig . Built by Jaime I the Conqueror in 1240. Its historical relevance comes from the fact that the definitive battle for the conquest of Valencia was fought in this place in 1237. While the hosts were preparing for the conquest of the capital, an image of the Virgin was found on the hill under a bell, which is preserved in the main chapel of the Sanctuary. Jaime I, considered the protection of the Virgin as a determining and effective cause of the conquest of the Kingdom of Valencia and proclaimed Santa María de El Puig as Patron Saint of the conquered Kingdom. He erected the temple to the heavenly Lady of the rescued lands, and wanted the Mercedarian religious to be the perpetual guardians of the sanctuary.

Guided tours of the Monastery can be made

We bring you the definitive recipe for Easter mona

The Easter monkey…. Oh what a great childhood memory! With its anisette, its animal shape, its colorful painted egg, who has not run after a brother, a cousin, a friend ... to crack the egg on his forehead? total, for most of the time you don't even eat it ...

Few know it, but its origin is to be a cake whose tasting symbolizes that Lent and its abstinences are over. It is a typical cake from the entire Mediterranean area, and its name comes from the "munna" or " mouna ", an Arabic term that means "provision of the mouth", a gift that the Muslims made to their lords.

Traditionally, the godfather is the one who gives the monkey to the godson and the custom was to go on an excursion to spend the afternoon playing rope or raising the cachirulo.

Today there are many different variations of the dough of the monkey and its cousin the pancake, and what to say about the eggs, which have become directly chocolate, (losing the grace of cracking someone on the forehead ...). But here we are going to leave you the traditional recipe so that it comes out with a real authentic flavor and the children can paint the cooked eggs as it has always been done.

The recipe: ingredients
-3 eggs
-150 cl of oil
-150 gr of sugar
-Yeast
-Boiled and fun painted egg

To make the dough, beat the eggs adding the lime zest, and little by little the oil and sugar. Stir everything well until the sugar is completely dissolved.

With each 100 gr of mixture add a handful of flour and a little yeast dissolved in a little warm water, and mix everything well.

Add more flour little by little and knead until it doesn't stick, it is better to smear your hands with oil. Stir and knead for at least half an hour. Let the dough rest for at least five hours or more in a warm place, until the dough ferments and rises. If this good it has to make a bittersweet smell.

After that time, form balls of pasta more or less like a tennis ball and give them the shape we want. Put the boiled egg in the center and leave them on a wood with a parchment paper underneath. They have to rest again for the necessary time until we see them rise again.

Spread the monas with beaten egg and dust them with sugar. Put them in the oven at 200º for half an hour, until they are cooked and have taken color.

Do you dare to snack Easter cake and empinar the cachirulo on the beach? We are waiting for you, we have a luxurious time!

Why come on vacation to Valencia?

If you are asking yourself this question, it is because you don't know Valencia yet, and if you don't know Valencia, you are missing something important...

Not because it is the third largest city in Spain, founded by the Romans, occupied by the Muslims and reconquered by the Christians, which could perhaps indicate the richness of the historical and monumental heritage of its historic centre.

Nor because it is bathed by the Mediterranean Sea and has beaches presided over by blue flags and awarded with recognitions such as the Q for Tourist Quality, where you can sunbathe on the sand, dive into the refreshing water, play volleyball, pedal on a scooter in the open sea, enjoy an ice cream, go for a catamaran or boat ride, take a sailing course, paddle surf, kite surf, or "anything surf"....

Nor because there is a multitude of ideal areas to go out and have a drink at nightfall in one of the fashionable bars, dance until dawn in the most select discotheques and enjoy "the Moon of Valencia"...

Nor because you can enjoy the best gastronomy, including, of course, rice in any of its varieties, paella, black, a banda, duck, seafood... Because the signature Mediterranean cuisine is unbeatable and the quality in Valencia's restaurants is a must. Not to mention the fact that you can enjoy tapas and a beer in any beach bar while you enjoy the sea breeze, or in any bodega in the city as you stroll through it.

Nor, of course, because it is the third best positioned Spanish city in Trivago's ranking of online reputation worldwide, with 81.64 points out of 100, and with more than 200,000 ratings.

Valencia is always good and simply because you can't miss it. There may be a few reasons why you shouldn't visit Valencia that only you would know, but there are thousands more why you should.
COME.

Central Market, a must see

The Central Market of the city of Valencia is a modernist style construction that began to be built in 1914 by Francesc Guàrdia i Vial and Alexandre Soler, both trained at the Barcelona School of Architecture and having worked in the team of collaborators of Domènech i Montaner, architect who was characterized by his own style within the lines of modernism.

The Central Market brings together almost 400 small merchants, mobilizing 1,500 people daily. It is the largest center in Europe dedicated to the specialty of fresh products; and the first market in the world that has faced the challenge of computerization of home sales and distribution, since October 2, 1996.

Selling vegetables.
Market dome.
Sale of eggs.
Sale of nuts.
Sale of seafood.
Sale of cuttlefish.
Sale of fruits.

It is one of the main tourist attractions in the city of Valencia. It is convenient to get lost in its streets, admire the polychrome of the fruits, feel the murmur of the voices of the people who speak and laugh; perceive the smells of roasted pumpkin, oranges, celery and artichokes; of the ovens, of the herbs and spices, to which Valencian cuisine is so given; spices that were already received in Valencia from the East through the route that passed through Venice and Naples in the 15th century; and that Joanot Martorell praised in "Tirant lo Blanch" when referring to ginger together with malvasia.

Appreciated by the Valencians, the Central Market is attended by fulfilling a traditional citizen rite, when Christmas days arrive and the stalls compete in ornamentation. As a replica of the fruits in stained glass and ceramics, it would seem that the garden, prodigiously, shows all the richness and variety of its crops specially placed in wicker, esparto or hemp baskets; while shellfish and fish have a bed of ice and parsley; without forgetting all the variety of nuts —especially figs and plums— that with the «porrat» (chickpeas in brine for a few hours, which are then roasted and given a plaster and salt bath) are requested on these dates, when you have to buy "The arrangement" (set of ingredients) for the "Christmas pot", the steaming plate that brings the family together and sings carols that are delicate lullabies: "No plores fillet, que et vela la mare; sleepy that the pare et fa un bressolet ».

Since 2004, the Integral Rehabilitation of the Market is in charge of the Madrid firm Fernández del Castillo Arquitectos, directed by Horacio Fernández del Castillo. His intervention consisted of a complete restoration of the building; and an update of the commercial function as a market and its facilities.

It is located between the Market Square, next to the Lonja de la Seda and the city square of Bruges. The old street of La Paja separates the Central Market from the Iglesia de los Santos Juanes. On the opposite side, the Central Market overlooks the pretty streets Palafox, Plaza En Gall and Calle de las Calabazas.

In the Central Market all kinds of food are sold such as fish, seafood, fruits, meats and sausages both for domestic consumption and to supply important restaurants in Valencia. Shopping in this place is charged with great charm due to the beauty of its architecture and the tradition and history of the market. The opening hours are every day, except Sunday, from 7:30 to 14:30.

Traveling with a pet. How to take her if you cant stop thinking about her when you go on vacation.

Thinking about how and where to travel with your pet when you go on vacation is inevitable. More and more people choose to share life with an animal and make it a member of the family, and I do not mean just a dog or a cute kitten that is the most common, from birds to snakes, through hedgehogs, hamsters or pigs Vietnamese… And as a family member that you are, you also deserve to go on vacation. And once this is non-negotiable, the steps to follow will be determined by the way you choose to travel with her and of course her character.

Travel with your pet safely

There are things when you travel with your pet that are mandatory, such as the one that is properly identified, that includes the mandatory microchip in the European Union and the daily vaccination record. Without that, it's like you went on a trip without your ID or your passport. Unthinkable. It is highly recommended that you have your own insurance or that it be included in yours.
Keep it calm, animals are very stressed by changes and a trip is an inexhaustible source of new things to explore, it can be lost if it gets lost in an unknown place. Do not change his diet and try not to eat much before the trip, if he gets dizzy he could vomit.
Keep in mind that there are people who do not like animals, or who may have some kind of allergy, be considerate, do not let them approach or, of course, get on top of anyone, especially in very places trafficked like stations or airports. If she is not going to travel with you, it will reassure her to bring some familiar object with her, such as a toy. Consider that it may be necessary to give him some tranquilizer, he may appreciate it if stress affects him a lot. Your vet will tell you for sure the most suitable one.

Travel by car

The first thing to take into account is the Traffic Law and what it says mainly is that the animal must not interfere with the driver's position or his field of vision. There are different types of mooring to be able to carry the animal subject and that it does not move freely through the vehicle, racks, carriers, moorings of one hitch, of two ... choose the one that best suits you.

Use appropriate restraint measures for your pet

If the trip is going to be very long, plan it taking into account stops for him to stretch, drink water or relieve himself. Eye! When you open the door that you do not miss. Of course, never leave him alone locked in the car especially if it is summer. Using common sense and for you that you know her well, traveling with your pet in a car should not pose any problem.

Travel by train

In Spain, Renfe will allow you to travel with your pet if it does not weigh more than ten kilos and as long as it goes in an adapted bag or container, come on, you cannot carry it in your arms. Depending on the type of train, conditions change, for AVE and long and medium distance trains you need to get a specific ticket for them, except if you travel in business class or in individual compartments. In most European countries you can travel with your pet for free.

Travel by airplane

Most of the European companies: Alitalia , Air France , Luffthansa …, the Spanish included <a href = "https://www.iberia.com/es/viajar-con-iberia/animales/" target = "_ blank" > Iberia, Air Europa , Vuelingthey will allow you to travel with your pet in the cabin as long as they are small and are in a carrier, if not, you will have to go to the hold and pay an extra. The problems come if you plan to go to Great Britain or Ireland, which have many restrictions on the entry of live animals, so if you fly there, companies like Ryanair will not let you get your partner on the plane.

You can travel by plane with your pet

It is better that you ask the company before getting the ticket online, it is possible that the confirmation that your pet can travel will be made after buying the ticket.

Travel by boat

In any of the main Spanish shipping companies: Balearia , Transmediterranea you can travel with your pet with you, which does not prevent you from taking it with you. They have spaces enabled for them and of course, different rates. They will let you go see her and bring her food and drink so it is not badly solved.
If you have already made up your mind and have taken a trip with your pet, surely you have faced many and varied problems and have had fun experiences, do you tell us?

Animals Are Not Things - New Law for Animals

Animal lovers (and those who are not too, even if they don't want to) are in luck. On December 12, the Congress of Deputies, with the support of all groups, approved the processing of the #AnimalesNoSonCosas initiative of the Affinity Foundation and the Animal Justice and Defense Observatory .

It is a proposal of law to change the legal regime of animals, so that they are no longer considered as things. According to the Spanish Civil Code dating from 1889, animals are still considered "livestock assets", that is, mere things and therefore susceptible to form part of inheritances, embargoes or divorce deals ...

The Affinity Foundation and the Animal Justice and Defense Observatory are the ones that have promoted the reform so that animals receive the legal status they deserve.

According to the results of the survey they have carried out and presented on World Animal Day, 84% of the Spanish population is in favor of animals being considered "living beings endowed with sensitivity" and 85% consider that animals politicians should legislate for the welfare of animals . Last year the Congress of Deputies unanimously approved to urge the Government to undertake this legal reform that is now being carried out.

The Minister of Justice has received the promoting entities to give their support to the initiative and to acknowledge the work carried out by both entities, which have participated both in the process and in the preparation of the text.

Route of the Castillo del Real in Olocau

Not just sea.

Now that it begins to cool and even if it costs us more, it is also very good to take a different walk and breathe air with a mountain aroma. Very close to Port Saplaya we have the beautiful Sierra Calderona that from its peaks offers us beautiful views of the sea and the entire city.

One of those pleasant routes is the Castell del Real in Olocau .

From its 574 m. This fortress served, along with other nearby ones, as a defensive bastion for Valencia, guarding the northwestern entrances. Its origin is in the 11th century, and its original name was " Hisn al-Uqab " " The Castle of the Eagle ", perhaps due to the cliffs that surround it and its elevation with respect to the territory that surrounds it, although it may also be to the abundant eagles that at that time inhabited that area of La Calderona.

It seems that the Cid Campeador was looking for the castle in the Reconquest because it was said that King Al-Qadir ordered to hide his treasures and his concubines within its walls. In any case, it was one of the last castles to fall into the hands of the Christians who changed its name to Castillo de Olocau and later ended up being called “Castillo del Real”.

The route is not very difficult, although going up to the castle can be somewhat tiring if we are not used to walking. It is a circular route, which leaves from the town itself, which is perfect to park the car and return to it without problems. It is approximately 13 km long and can be done at a normal pace in about four hours.

At the beginning of the route we find El Venturer , a beautiful monumental tree that really begins at l'arquet and Font de la Cava . Follow the RoEl Venturer Route, a monumental tree on the outskirts of Olocau and the starting point of the excursion marked by the Serra Calderona Natural Park and following the signs it is impossible to get lost. Throughout the entire route we will enjoy the vegetation typical ofthe Mediterranean forest , garroferos, pines, palmitos ... and if we go calmly we can stop from time to time to enjoy the fantastic landscape.

To go down we take the path that surrounds the castle hill through a lush forest and following the ravine we reach the old Moorish town of La Olla. On the way back, we passed through the beautiful Font del Sentig on the way to Barranc dels Frares , to finally reach Olocau again.

What to see in Fallas?

See a mascletá.

Without hesitation. It is one of the most special events that take place in Valencia in Fallas. So much so, that the mascletás start to shoot up long before the official start of the festivities.

Shoot, yes, because mascletás shoot; They are pyrotechnic shots that make up a very noisy and rhythmic composition. Unlike fireworks that seek visual stimulation, mascletás aim to stimulate the body through the loud rhythmic noises of masclets (firecrackers with great sound power). What distinguishes a mascletá from a succession of explosions is the rhythm that the masclets must create when they explode, it is essential that the force of the explosions go from less to more, with a tremendous ending, the terratrèmol, without which a mascletá cannot. considered good and in which the public bounces, vibrates, shouts and even tears tears to the rhythm of the masclets. There are those who maintain that Valencians are a bit crazy among the firecrackers and the fire, maybe yes, but what cannot be denied is that the show is impressive.

The mascletás of Valencia have undergone a continuous evolution, especially in the technique and in the quantity of gunpowder. Currently, and for security reasons, the gunpowder limit is set at 120 kilos per mascletá, although on March 19, 2008 the limit was increased to 240 kilos. Regarding the technique used, it has evolved from a traditional execution where only wick and the action of the pyrotechnics are used, to an electronics that is currently used, where the ignition is caused by an electronic system, which allows greater accuracy and security.

Formerly the mascletá was fired in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento de Valencia on San José's day (March 19) and as the culmination of the Fallas festivities. Later it was expanded in number until it reached the current 19, to which must be added all those that the Fallas commissions do in their neighborhoods throughout the city. Seeing Valencia at 2 in the afternoon on a Fallas day from the air becomes an unforgettable option.

Where can you see a mascletá?

From March 1 to 19 in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. From March 16 to 19 in most of the streets of Valencia.

Usual time: 2:00 p.m.

Quick and easy ideas to eat on the beach

Here are our picks for easy recipes that are quick to prepare, ideal for picnics, the beach, the pool or the countryside during the summer.

We are already on holiday. We have arrived at our chosen beach and we have little desire to do one of the things we do every day: cooking. But since we can't stop feeding ourselves, on pain of starvation, we will have to look for solutions that don't require a lot of time and meet sufficient nutritional requirements.

It's not that in summer you don't really want to binge on calorie-laden meals, quite the opposite, and if you're spending the day at the beach what you really want is something cool and easy to eat under the umbrella, which helps you cope with the heat and doesn't stop you from taking a dip because of heavy digestion.

Let's assume two things:  that we are properly hydrated to avoid sunstroke and stay vital all the time (we will talk about this in another post), and that we are not going to resort every day to the gratifying snack (to which we will also dedicate a special post).

Breaded chicken, nowadays known as nuggets or fingers.

It is the star dish along with potato omelette. You can prepare it the day before and it can be eaten cold, on its own or with bread and, importantly, it can be eaten with your hands, which children love and which means they don't get into trouble (a positive point for the chicken).

Cut the breasts into whatever shape you prefer, bearing in mind that the thicker the pieces are, the longer the cooking time will have to be. Beat the eggs in a bowl and put the breadcrumbs on another plate to make the breading for the chicken breasts. salt the chicken breasts, dip them first in egg and then in breadcrumbs and fry them in plenty of olive oil, then drain them on kitchen paper and put them in the taper. Cracker!

Battered hake in cubes.

If fish is more your thing, this is the chicken version and an easy way to get kids to eat fish without too much fuss.

We cut the hake into small pieces (better if we have it in loins, and not in slices). Then add a little salt, dip them in egg and flour, and fry them in a frying pan with hot oil. Once fried, we pass them through absorbent paper and let them cool down to put them in some tapers. Alehop!

Something a little more elaborate:

Tuna pasties

Empanadillas of whatever you have left over from dinner, but the tuna ones are the quickest.
Finely chop an onion and a green pepper and fry them in a frying pan with 2 tablespoons of oil. When it is well fried, add a little fried tomato (lower the heat to the minimum so that the tomato does not jump and you have to waste time cleaning the cooker) and leave it for a few minutes so that it mixes well.
Take it out of the pan and mix it with the tuna. Then we fill the pastry wafers with our mixture, fold them in half and use a fork to flatten the edges of the wafers.
Finally, fry them in plenty of oil and pass them through kitchen paper to remove the remaining oil. Shall I repeat the advantages of eating them with your hands?....

To be continued...

How to protect children's skin from the sun

We all know that the sun has beneficial effects on our body. But if we take it in excess or without adequate protection it can also be harmful, especially for children's skin because it is more delicate.

It is on the beach, above all, where children spend the day entering and leaving the water and exposed to solar radiation, where we must pay more attention to ensuring that their skin is well protected.

In theory they should never be exposed directly to the sun, but, since keeping them seated under the umbrella is impossible, hats and t-shirts are essential. In recent years, t-shirts made of special fabrics have become fashionable to be used on the beach and are ideal for protecting the child without being disturbed to play.

Even so, the application of a good sun cream with a protection factor that is as high as possible is necessary. It is better to use a special cream for children since its texture is lighter so that it is easier to spread and the skin absorbs quickly and also because they can be used on the face and body. It is important to check on the packaging that they are broad spectrum, that is, that they cover against UVA and UVB rays because not all do.

Of course, it is not worth using the cream that we have left over from last year, the creams have a limited duration that is specified on the packaging with the symbol of a jar and a number inside.

For the protector to be as effective as possible, it should be applied at least half an hour before we expose ourselves to the Sun so that the skin has time to absorb it and to be perfectly protected. The amount of product must be abundant: never less than 20 ml of cream for the whole body and there are some areas that should be especially emphasized such as the scalp, neck, ears, cheekbones, nose, shoulders, the upper area of the thighs, and the instep of the feet, an area that we do not usually think about and that is very prone to burns.

At least every two hours you have to repeat the application, before if the child is sweating a lot and after each bath, even if the cream is waterproof.

It is also necessary even if it is cloudy , since the clouds filter infrared radiation, but not ultraviolet rays, which are also reflected in the sand and even if it is in the water since , like clouds, the water does not filter the rays ultraviolet, it only eliminates the feeling of heat.

Basically, and at the very least, this is what we must do to avoid the painful sunburns that can make children bitter, and by extension us, beach vacations.

Why do we celebrate Valentines Day?

When do we start celebrating love?

Valentine is a day with a really curious story. We can start with the pagan festivals that were celebrated in Rome dedicated to fertility. Go through the creation of "the Court of Love" established by King Charles VI of France where adolescent men competed to find a partner among the court maidens. And to get to what is considered the oldest love letter that exists and that the French Duke, Charles of Orleans, after being captured at the Battle of Azincourt and locked up in the Tower of London, wrote to his wife on February 14 ...

Why celebrate Valentine's Day?

Well, because in the year 494 after Christ, Pope Gelasius I decided to reconvert it into a Catholic holiday. For this he had a suitable candidate, the saint who in 270 BC defied the order of Emperor Claudius II that prohibited young people from marrying (he thought that single children without children were better soldiers) and secretly married young couples in love.

It was in the early 19th century in Britain that Valentine's Day cards , with ready-made phrases, began to be marketed and quickly spread to the rest of Europe and America.

In any case and being clear that love must be celebrated , cared for and pampered every day, it is a day as good as any other for you and your partner to spend extra time, why not ?: a beautiful sunset , a walk by the sea, a romantic dinner, a bottle of cava, some strawberries, some chocolate truffles ...

In the Nordic countries, it is at this time when birds mate and mate, hence this period is seen as a symbol of love and creation. I do not say more.

We give it to you with our Valentine's pack . The love you put it.

What to do so that your pet does not suffer from his fear of noise

The fear of pet noises, whether of thunder, firecrackers, or other roars, can turn into a phobia that affects their health and well-being and, by extension, ours.

For years, Spain has been considered the loudest country in the European Union , and the second after Japan worldwide, as reflected in the world ranking of noisy cities prepared by the World Health Organization. And what are we going to say about Valencia in Fallas: the music of the bands, the festivals, the macletás, the firecrackers ...

Fear of noises like thunder, slamming doors, and fireworks is a common problem for all animals. Sound impacts the hearing of pets , due to its special sensitivity. It can cause great nervousness to them and to us, it can be a real anguish and concern.

But there are things we can do to try to alleviate these effects of noise:

-You can teach him to associate noise with something positive, such as a candy. You can do it with a vacuum cleaner. Turn it on and bring it closer to your pet, stay next to it, reassure it, caress it and give it some treat. Practice it several times, until you get used to it and no longer identify the noise as threatening.
-Use a pheromone necklace to reduce stress levels. They can be used to great effect on anxious cats and dogs.
-Hide noise with other sounds. Turn on the radio or television to muffle background noise.
-When the noise starts, try to give him something to chew on. This action reduces stress because you will be more distracted.
-Don't leave him alone at home.
-Transmit calm. That he does not see you nervous or upset with him because you know what is going to happen.
-If your pet is a dog, you can try “Doggies”, a project by the Valencian company Valway that consists of a band placed around the body. The pressure exerted by the band when placing it pressing certain points on its body, transmits sensory information to the dog's brain and serves as a substitute for the pressure that a human can exert when stroking it.

In any case, we know that the best thing is to be able to enjoy our favorite parties with them and have them by our side. And if you cannot calm your pet with so much noise, you can come with her on those days to Port Saplaya , which we will be delighted to welcome you and surely the walks on the beach and the warmth of the Sun will make her tremendously happy. And you too.

Bike routes

CIRCULATING THE BIKE LANE

Use the bike path . For your safety, use the bike path whenever you can, even if it involves a small detour on the most direct route.
Be respectful of pedestrians . If you see pedestrians standing or walking along the bike lane, slow down and alert them to your presence with the buzzer. In those areas where many pedestrians travel next to the bike lane and since you cannot foresee the paths they lead, moderate and accommodate your speed to theirs.
Drive wisely . Control your speed, the bike lane is neither a velodrome nor a competition circuit. Do not travel at a speed greater than that which guarantees the safety of all in the existing conditions.
Respect the traffic signs . Don't skip the red lights. With this, in addition to creating dangerous situations, you contribute to the bicycle not being considered a serious and respectable means of transport, discrediting all cyclists.
Avoid dangers . If there are cars parked next to the bike lane, do not drive near them to avoid damage if a door opens unexpectedly.
Respect the rights of pedestrians . As pedestrian crossings are not marked on the bike lane, at any point you can find a pedestrian crossing it: reduce your speed and give way.
Keep both hands on the handlebars . You will react more quickly to any unforeseen event and the braking distance will be shorter.

DRIVING ON THE ROAD

If you are forced to circulate on the road with the rest of the traffic when you travel by bicycle, keep the following recommendations in mind:

Find a safe itinerary . Study the itineraries so that you circulate through quiet streets avoiding those with high traffic intensity or those that circulate at high speed.
Stay visible to other drivers . Avoid staying in the blind spot of other drivers.
Respect the traffic signs . Do not skip the red lights, do not drive in the wrong direction, respect the stop signs, etc.
Warn with hand signals . Communicate your movements with your hands in advance, the other drivers will know your trajectory which will increase your safety.
Check that your path is clear . Exercise extreme caution when crossing tram tracks, any type of grating, or when you see a hole or pothole in the pavement. Learn to look back over your shoulder without losing your balance or deviating from your path, thus checking the path of other vehicles.
Keep your track . Do not move to the curb when there are gaps between parked cars, other drivers may not see you when you return to your initial path. Don't zigzag through traffic.
Circulate on your right . The law obliges you to do so. When there are several lanes, it is in the lane on the right where you drive at the slowest speed. If the lane is narrow, for everyone's safety, drive through the center of it.
Turn left safely . While riding a bicycle, you can turn left with the rest of the traffic, but it is safer to do it in two stages, stopping to the right of the vehicles that, waiting for the green, are going in the same direction as you.
Drive in a straight line . Ride to the right of the vehicles that are going faster than you, describing a straight path and separated from the parked vehicles so that you cannot be damaged by a door that opens suddenly.

PEDALE EQUIPPED

Make yourself see . Try to wear light or brightly colored clothing. At night use front and rear lights and put reflectors on the bike and your clothes.
Keep your bike in good running condition . The mechanics of the bicycle are simple and require few specialized tools for maintenance. If you do not have the basic knowledge, go to a workshop when you observe any anomaly in accordance with the recommendations detailed below.
Stay in shape . Exercise in your leisure time, with this, traveling by bicycle around the city will cost you less effort and your perspiration will be less.
Pedal insured . As for the rest of the vehicles that circulate on public roads, there are insurance policies that cover damage to third parties, civil liability, etc.
Dress appropriately . Put the helmet on. Gloves increase comfort and protect your hands from the cold. It is recommended that the shoes support the feet firmly and that you dress in layers, to adjust to the changes in temperature throughout the day.
Tie the bike where you leave it . Buy the best lock you can - no lock is as expensive as a new bike. U-locks are more secure. If your bike has quick-clamping devices on the wheels, don't forget to tie both when you leave it unattended.
